John Cena’s “The Suicide Squad” Character Peacemaker Gets HBO Max Spinoff Series

We’re….confused but delighted(!?) to report that John Cena‘s “The Suicide Squad” character Peacemaker is getting his own spinoff series on HBO Max.

This news was announced by Cena, and director James Gunn via their Twitter accounts his morning.

Working alongside @JamesGunn on #SuicideSquad was an absolute masterclass in how to best bring beloved characters to life in a new and fun way. I cannot wait for the #DCUniverse to experience more of absurdity that is the Peacemaker in this new project on @hbomax!!! pic.twitter.com/PZ9dOa7Dzj

I'm over-the-moon excited to be working on #PEACEMAKER with my pals @JohnCena & #TheSuicideSquad producer Peter Safran on this new @hbomax original series from @warnerbrostv @DCComics pic.twitter.com/EsAkOVXB44

    — James Gunn (@JamesGunn) September 23, 2020

Gunn will be writing and directing the series, which has already been ordered for 8 episodes for HBO Max.

It’s currently being described as an “action adventure comedy,” and will reportedly explore the origins of the Peacemaker character. No additional details are known at this time, probably to protect the storyline of the upcoming Warner Bros. Pictures DC Comics property film, “The Suicide Squad.”

We’re pretty excited to see what Gunn had to say when ComicBook’s BD asked him why this particular project for TV (in a round about way).

True. It’s also DC coming to me & saying, “If you could do a TV show about any character from The Suicide Squad, which one would you do 1st?” And I was like, “I’ve been having this idea about #Peacemaker…” I’m always driven by what excites me most creatively in the moment. https://t.co/tY6VNot9Hy

And then he makes us all look bad, using his quarantine downtime between two giant movies to write a damn tv series. (We kid, we kid.)

I’m doing #Peacemaker in the time always allotted between #TheSuicideSquad & #GotGVol3. Normally I would have been taking more of a break in this space but it’s Covid, I’m stuck at home, so I wrote a TV series. https://t.co/lARE63ypwI

“The Suicide Squad” still has a release date of August 6th, 2021.

You can see the first look for the film here, which was first shown during DC FanDome.
