Who would have imagined that thirty years ago Judy Sheindlin would become the most-watched woman on daytime TV? In 1996, she appeared on television sets for the first time as a TV judge. The format was not new. It had already been done by The People’s Court years prior. Her personality was new. Judge Judy thrived off the no-nonsense attitude and coarse demeanor of Sheindlin. It kept viewers engaged, brought more courtroom arbitration shows to the airwaves, and carved out a place in television history. The show Judge Judy wrapped up in 2021. Sheindlin would go on to star on another show, but now, as of 2026, she’s hanging up the robes.
Judge Judy & Her Rise to Stardom
Before being a television star, Sheindlin was a legitimate family court judge. After being profiled in a newspaper article and on 60 Minutes, she got her own television show. Television judges on these programs don’t actually act as legitimate judges. They technically are acting as arbitrators. Two parties legally agree that they will have their civil disagreement sorted by an arbitrator who just so happens to be Judith Sheindlin in this case. So, when those catchphrases at the start of an episode are read off, “the cases are real,” “the rulings are final,” it’s not wrong. Judge Judy was actually arbitrating legitimately filed complaints, with her ruling being legally stipulated to by the parties.
She did that work for 25 years in syndication on Judge Judy. Then, she shifted over to Amazon and their Freevee service. This was later scrapped and merged into Amazon Prime, where her show Judy Justice has been airing since 2021. Even that’s coming to an end this October, though. Judy is hanging up her robes and retiring from being in front of the camera. She still says she’ll be working as a producer, though. Which makes complete sense considering the empire she’s built.
Other Shows and her Son Continuing the Legacy
Sheindlin has created a number of legal shows. Hot Bench has been running since 2014. Tribunal Justice started on Amazon’s streaming services in 2023. Then we have the recently debuted Adam’s Law, which seems to be Judge Judy’s primary focus moving forward. The program is fronted by Adam Levy, who happens to be Sheindlin’s son. She’s an executive producer on the show and seems content to spend the rest of her time in television being behind the scenes.
She has had one hell of a career in terms of longevity and cultural impact. Whether you love or hate Judge Judy, you know who she is. She may be the most famous person in the world to ever be associated with the legal profession. Thirty years in television is a milestone only a select number of people can say they’ve accomplished.
