Schedule shuffling is an increasingly common thing in the film industry. Sometimes a film needs some elbow room to make some money. And if a film is big enough, other projects want to give it that room. Hard to make money when someone else is eating up all of it. And then sometimes you just don’t know why certain things are shifting. Take the upcoming Gremlins film. Let’s just call it Gremlins 3. That just got its clock-punch back a year. And did you even know there was a Dynamic Duo film happening?
What the Hell is Dynamic Duo?
Let’s start with this Dynamic Duo film. That’s the nickname given to the pairing of Batman & Robin. This is set up to be a Robin origin story. Or we guess it’s a “Robins” origin story. It’s said to feature both Dick Grayson and Jason Todd, the first two canonical Robins in the Batman mythos. It’s an odd choice for a film considering that no one really was asking for a Robin movie. Plus, if you know Batman comics, you know that Grayson only got interesting as Nightwing. Meanwhile, Jason Todd only got interesting after Joker killed him with a crowbar and blew him up. Those were the days.
The Dynamic Duo film is going to be made with a combination of animation and puppetry. Definitely an interesting approach for a movie that’s likely going to bomb harder than the explosion that killed Jason Todd. (Just for fun, we’re going to see how many more potshots we can take at Jason Todd through this article.) The project wasn’t going to be happening “soon”; now it’s taking another few months off. It was scheduled for June 30th, 2028. Now it’s September 22, 2028. Reports indicate that WB is stating the project will be a good “back to school season film.”
Which is interesting because, just like interest in Jason Todd, this is not a thing. The summer season is definitely a thing. There’s not an “Oh, kids are back in school so they have less time to go to the movies. That’s when to release this!” Sure, we’re buying that like Jason Todd bought a crowbar to his forehead. As reports point out, this conveniently moves the movie out of the same date as the Paramount Skydance Call of Duty movie.
Gremlins 3 & The Secret of Bad Timing
But then there’s Gremlins 3. The series was just fine with two entries, but here we go with another. This is the one that’s getting kicked back harder than Jason Todd at a crowbar convention. It was going to premiere on November 19th, 2027. It’s been kicked back 11 months to October 6, 2028. At least that fits with the spooky season. Which is weird to say considering the first film is a Christmas movie.
Do we need Gremlins 3? No, we don’t. Will it be a good film? Really hard to say; it depends on how much they lean into the camp. Gremlins never took itself too seriously as a franchise. The severely underrated Gremlins 2: The New Batch was evidence of that. Gremlins 3 seems like a bigger joke than the second film just based on the premise alone. Seriously, if you watched the second movie, then you know it’s one big, glorious piss-take on the stupidity of sequels. And then we eventually get Gremlins 3 after a long enough time has passed to forget the lessons we were taught from number two.
