CBR reports that Director Todd Phillips hopes to get the last laugh as he teases the start of principal photography on Warner Bros.’ Joker. A gritty origin story for Batman’s iconic arch-nemesis, the film stars three-time Academy Award nominee Joaquin Phoenix in the title role, with Martin Scorsese attached to produce. https://www.instagram.com/p/BnOx6FAg9qm/?utm_source=ig_embed&utm_campaign=embed_loading_state_control Phillips shared a brooding photo of himself enveloped in smoke, accompanied by the catpion, “Here we go.” But he’s not the only one getting ready for the film. Powerglove: A band from Boston that does an amazing, glorious thing. They play speed-metal covers of video game and cartoon music. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqUecsSvGqU These guys have been around forever. I remember hearing about them back around 2008-2009, just about the same time as DragonForce was getting big. In fact, the bands even toured together. I’ve loved them ever since. And when they announced they were touring for their new album ‘Continue?’, there was no way I could miss that show. I was hugely surprised when I saw that the band’s enormous sound came out of three guys. One on drums, one…

Experiments, Invention Exchanges, KTMA, Metals, Cels, Sketch Cards, Glow in the Dark, Limited Editions and a whole lot more! We truly live in a glorious time. Mystery Science Theater 3000 is one of my longest running fandoms. I remember when we used to have to buy ill-fitting shirts, blown out posters, and CDs which I hope Joel Hodgeson burned on his own computer. But now, not only is there an amazing amount of new merchandise on the shelves, but the MST3K crew knows that crowd-funding is the way to go with this incredible series. As many of us know, when the…

Over the last few years, the Japanese type-designer-turned-retro-font archivist who works at the type foundry Monotype, has been assembling pixel-based alphabets from arcade games such as Tank 8, Space Invaders, and Street Fighter. “There are actually so many good arcade fonts that we collectively haven’t paid attention to,” said Omagari at the Cooper Union’s TypoGraphics conference in June. According to an article published by Quartz, in the days before the industry changed to high definition graphics in 2004, early game designers had to confine each letter within an 8 x 8 pixel grid, leaving one of those pixels for spacing. The article states that letters had to…

When it comes to horror franchises, you’ve got your heavy hitters– Nightmare on Elm Street…Friday the 13th…Halloween…Leprechaun. Nah, just kidding about that last one, those films were terrible. However, the Phantasm franchise has been around for almost 40 years and has amassed a cult following of fans. Don Coscarelli (who made some of my favorite films like Beastmaster, Bubba Ho-Tep and John Dies at the End) was an independent filmmaker in 1977 when he conceived Phantasm. It was a film about an intergalactic…

Almost 30 years later and people are still asking: Was that really Michael Jackson in that episode of The Simpsons? Well, grab hold of your socks, Simpsons fans. The big man himself Matt Groening is here to confirm. CBR reports that the years-old debate stretches all the way back to the 1991 Simpsons episode “Stark Raving Dad,” which sees Homer committed to a psychiatric hospital. While receiving treatment in the hospital, Homer meets a man who is very clearly not Michael Jackson but claims to be. While the character sounds exactly like Michael Jackson, the role was credited to alias John Jay…
