The Literary hero and dark lord and master himself, R.L. Stine once said that humor and fear are very closely tied. We get scared, yet once we realize everything is okay, we laugh. It’s a sweet and innocent anecdote that perfectly sums up the childhood experience of being scared by a harmless, and welcomed boo. But what happens when we get older? Well, for many of us, nothing. We either read or watch scary stories, revel in the rush of adrenaline brought on by the fear, the heightened senses, the wondering who could be nearby…watching us. But, if you’re a…

It’s fair to say that people have a tendency to remember things a little wonky when looking at the past with Childhood Goggles strapped to their peepers. With the nostalgia plane still soaring high in Internetville, and people talking about how everything “back then” was so much better/everything now is trash, sometimes it’s easy to remember things as better than they were. But it got me thinking about those old cartoons of yesteryear. I examined certain tropes, roles, and stereotypes in cartoons that were super popular in the old stuff. I paired it up today’s cartoons…and whoops, surprise- Nothing changes.…

Finally, less than a day ago, an official trailer hit the internet. And while announcements were made last month that visual-kei artist Miyavi would play the role of Byakuya Kuchiki in the live action Bleach film, seeing him in action was nothing short of exhilarating. However, isn’t the first time movie studios have relied on rock star power in Japan. In 2003, Japan’s two biggest rock…

Bootleg toys- they have their reputation for a reason. Even saying the word bootleg evokes mental images of off-model figurines. Wonky eyed toys in the wrong color. China Town multipacks of toys where Spiderman, a Ninja Turtle, a sort-of Power Ranger, and Batman all coexist in microwaved, lopsided harmony. But what do you do when the story is reversed? We expect little to no quality from bootlegs and know what we’re getting when we dive that dive. But when the script is flipped and we purchase official, licensed products that are so wrong that we wish they were bootlegs…well…that’s a…

“Oh, you make cartoons? Do you work for Disney? Is life working in the studios one big party 24/7? Are the voice actors as cool in real life as they seem in interviews?” There are many misconceptions and preconceived ideas surrounding the animation industry. Ever since the South Park crew revealed (both in interviews and the more recent documentary 6 Days to Air) that they can get an episode on TV in as little as well…six days, there seems to be a disconnect between how long it takes to make a show. Ever since actor/creators like Mike Judge (Beavis and…
