If you’ve never attended “Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party,” you could be forgiven for dismissing it as a strictly kid-focused event. Much of the marketing for Walt Disney World‘s spooky-season festivities focuses on Mickey Mouse and his pals dressed in cute costumes. The event also includes trick-or-treating throughout the park, complete with candy bags that little ones are encouraged to fill.
But while the limited ticketed event, running select nights through Halloween, is no doubt family-friendly, there’s much more to it than the not-so-scary stuff. You needn’t be a child nor a “Disney adult” to enjoy an event that’s a bit darker than it initially lets on.
For starters, the fab five – Mickey, Minnie, Donald, Goofy, and Pluto – are just the face of the party. You’re welcome to snap pics with the mascot mouse and his buddies, but there are many more fan-favorites from popular movies. Captain Jack Sparrow, The Nightmare Before Christmas‘ Jack and Sally, and Hocus Pocus‘ Sanderson sisters also participate in the party. Many of Disney’s scarier villains, from Jafar and the Evil Queen to Hades and Dr. Facilier, are also in attendance.
Witches, Pirates, and Pumpkin Kings
Some of these creepy characters are available for meet-and-greets, while others are featured in their own dedicated shows. The “Hocus Pocus Villain Spectacular,” for example, brings together Winifred, Mary, and Sarah Sanderson in an all-new tale. The trio is also joined by a who’s who of Disney baddies, including Oogie Boogie, Captain Hook, Maleficent, and more.
Captain Jack also hosts his own show, albeit a more rowdy, rollicking one, over by his signature attraction “Pirates of the Caribbean.” If sea shanties, swashbuckling performers, and other pirate shenanigans are your preference, “Captain Jack’s Buccaneer Bash” has got you covered.
Of course, many of these slightly edgier characters also feature heavily in the party’s evening parade and fireworks shows. The latter is hosted by a life-sized, scary-real Jack Skellington puppet, who holds court in front of Cinderella’s Castle. The Pumpkin King turns the castle into a haunted house of sorts, as fireworks and projections spin an original spine-tingling tale. Most of the aforementioned foes are also featured alongside other creepy favorites, including Ursula and the Queen of Hearts.
Parade Highlights Include Haunted Mansion, Headless Horseman
Not to be outdone by the fireworks spectacular, the event’s parade balances its family-friendly fun with a stacked cast of less savory sorts. Sparrow has his own float and is accompanied by a crew of menacing scallywags and a scowling Captain Barbossa. An even longer – and scarier – stretch of the parade is dedicated to the park’s “Haunted Mansion” attraction. Grave diggers with sparking shovels, dancing ghouls and ghosts, and a goosebumps-raising hovering bride represent the classic dark ride. Of course, the attraction’s iconic trio of hitchhiking ghosts are also present and accounted for.
The parade also boasts more Disney baddies – both main villains and sidekicks – than you can shake a poison apple at. And let’s not forget the fabled Headless Horseman from The Adventures of Ichabod and Mr. Toad. A highlight for more mature visitors, the decapitated rider precedes the parade, speeding past guests – on a real steed, no less – wielding a jack-o’-lantern.
The party also sees the park’s famed barbershop quartet, “The Dapper Dans,” get a macabre makeover. Dubbed “The Cadaver Dans” during the event, the singers transform into undead performers, representing one of the party’s grimmer inclusions. Some of the Magic Kingdom’s most popular attractions also reveal their darker side. This is quite literally the case with “Space Mountain,” which goes pitch black and pipes in a haunting soundtrack.
Family Fun…and Frights
“Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party” is undeniably a family-friendly event that kids – and kids at heart – absolutely adore. From its classic Disney characters in cute costumes to its all-you-can-collect candy, it’s pretty much any tyke’s Halloween dream.
But while those familiar, family-aimed experiences get most of the attention, there’s just as much spookier stuff for older fans. Whether you’re passionate about Hocus Pocus or are a hardcore “Haunted Mansion” fan, you’ll find something to chill your spine. If you prefer The Pirates of the Caribbean, The Nightmare Before Christmas, or Disney’s stable of villains, the party’s also got your back.
Of course, the best way to enjoy the evening is by balancing both the scarier tricks and the fun treats. So while you’ll want to, say, wait in line to snap a pic with the Pumpkin King and secure a Headless Horseman popcorn bucket, you’ll also want to make time to see Stitch in his Elvis costume.
