Thank you to our friends over at The One Ring, and a certain Hobbit Hero named Sean Astin, we can finally confirm at long last a 4K release of both of Peter Jackson‘s masterful trilogies “The Lord of the Rings” and “The Hobbit” is coming!

The One Ring broke this news, with a video announcement from Astin, which you can watch here:

“Because it’s in 4K UHD, you know it’s going to be the most incredible home viewing experience possible. Peter Jackson oversaw the remastering himself, and I can say that working with Peter was the adventure of a lifetime. The friendships that I made will last forever,” Astin says.

The official announcement from Warner Bros. Pictures came shortly thereafter:

Warner Bros. is also announcing that in the summer of 2021 it will be releasing a 4K ULTIMATE COLLECTORS’ EDITION with theatrical and extended versions of ALL SIX of the remastered films and new bonus content.  Additionally, to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the first The Lord of the Rings film, a newly remastered Blu-ray trilogy of The Lord of the Rings films will be available in the Fall of 2021, also including the theatrical and extended versions.

So, while we have to wait another year for the ultimate set, THEY’RE COMING! Break out the lembas bread!

Mary Anne Butler (Mab) has been part of the fast-paced world of journalism since she was 15, getting her start in album reviews and live concert coverage for a nationally published (print) music magazine. She eventually transitioned to online media, writing for such sites as UGO/IGN, ComicsOnline, Geek Magazine, Ace of Geeks, Aggressive Comix (where she is still Editor-in-Chief), Bleeding Cool (where she was News Editor), and now Nerdbot as Editor-In-Chief. Over the past 10 years, she’s built a reputation at conventions across the globe as a cosplayer (occasionally), photographer (constantly), panelist and moderator (mostly), and reporter (always). Interviews, reviews, observations, breaking news, and objective reporting are the name of the game for the founder of Harkonnen Knife Fight, a Dune-themed band with an international presence. Though she be but little, she is fierce.
