Making ‘Suicide Squad’ Was One Of The Hardest Times In James Gunn’s Life

When you lose someone close to you sometimes it’s easier to bury yourself in work. Other times however you may find that you have a commitment that wont allow you the proper time to grieve. James Gunn has come out and said that working on Suicide Squad was during one of the hardest times in his life. But not because working on the film was hard for him. Because he had lost a very important person just prior to filming.

He posted on Instagram about what had happened and how this movie was difficult for him. While posting the traditional “That’s a wrap” message he told us why he was having a hard time throughout filming. He had lost his father a few weeks before shooting and then during the end of it he had to halt production to be with his dying dog.

“It was a hard, hard time in my life, and yet the most fulfilling time I’ve ever had making a movie. The professionalism, talent, compassion and kindness of this cast and crew inspired me every day.”

“Thanks to everyone involved in this film, in every stage of development, in every department – I am grateful from the bottom of my heart for you all. You are why I make movies.”

The Past Few Years

James Gunn has had a bit of a hard time in the media the past few years, with his inappropriate twitter joke coming back to haunt him. He was dismissed from working at Disney and then brought back after a short period of time. In fact the Guardians of the Galaxy cast vied hard for his return.

He’s always treated the cast and crew with great respect and that shows in his reputation. Everyone he’s worked with has nothing but great things to say about him. Knowing that he went through such a hard time with this film makes us want to go see it even more. It’s possible that it will be even more brilliant because of the pain and anguish he was going through. And while that may sound a bit mean a lot of the most beautiful art came through painful experiences.

Suicide Squad is set to premiere August 26, 2021.
