This is a Nerd Voices contributing pieces from Nerdbot reader Chris Macauley. You can see more of his writing on his personal blog, Talking Comics. I’m going to admit this straight away, I’m not the biggest fan of slasher films.  The plots depend on stupid protagonists who are there as fodder to get sliced up. However when I was younger, I did enjoy The Nightmare on Elm street series.  Freddy terrified me, he could invade your dreams, when you were at your most vulnerable and kill you in a multitude of grizzly and inventive ways.   A game based on this…

This is the most beautiful and heartbreaking thing at the exact same time. As reported directly from Mattel Toys, Barbie® (yes, the doll herself) announces the Dream Gap Project, a multi-year global initiative to raise awareness around limiting factors that prevent girls from reaching their full potential. Research* has identified that starting at age five many girls are less likely than boys to view their own gender as smart and begin to lose confidence in their own competence. Cultural stereotypes, implicit biases and representation in media work together to further this issue. In the United States, this has been referenced as the…

Take for instance this version of the Blues-Eyes White Dragon card. Only one in the entire world exists, and it was up for sale in a card shop in Akihabara this year for 45 million yen (about US$400,000). While my older sisters played with Strawberry Shortcake dolls, Moon Dreamers, Jem, Barbie and the Rockers, and My Little Pony, the only one I can remember connecting with is Rainbow Brite. Something about her resonated and stuck with me. In retrospect (because really, what other kind of ‘spect is there?) I think I enjoyed the balance of male to female characters, the action, and…
