Jon M. Chu to Direct Live-Action “Hot Wheels” Movie

Filmmaker Jon M. Chu is in high demand after “Wicked” nabbed 10 Oscar nominations and made over $756 million globally. With the sequel slated to release in November, Chu is starting to sign on to other projects like “Split Fiction” and “Oh, The Places You’ll Go.” Along with those titles, it looks like he’ll also direct Mattel’s live-action “Hot Wheels” movie.

Imagine seeing your own design in these boxes!

“Hot Wheels has always been about more than speed — it’s about imagination, connection and the thrill of play,” Chu said. “Bringing that spirit to the big screen is an incredible opportunity. I’m excited to partner with Mattel Studios, Warner Bros. Pictures, and Bad Robot to create an adventure that honors Hot Wheels’ legacy while driving it somewhere entirely new.”

    “Hot Wheels“

It is reportedly an action film inspired by Mattel’s classic toy of the same name. Specific plot details are under wraps, but it’s safe to assume there will be a lot of high-end cars involved. The script is being written by Juel Taylor and Tony Rettenmaier, the same duo behind “Creed II”.

“Jon’s ability to craft rich, elaborate worlds with a distinct point of view makes him the ideal storyteller to bring Hot Wheels to life,” says Robbie Brenner, Mattel Studios’ President and Chief Content Officer. ”His films are visual spectacles — true eye candy — but what sets them apart is how he weaves unforgettable narratives within those stunning frames. Paired with Juel and Tony’s compelling storytelling, this team is uniquely positioned to capture the heart, adrenaline, and spirit of Hot Wheels, a leading brand in car culture.”

Mattel first launched its Hot Wheels toy car line in 1968, when company co-founder Elliot Handler conceived the idea as a sleeker and cooler version of Matchbox cars, which were dominating the market. Over the decades, the line has sold 8 billion toys, leaving an indelible mark on pop culture and childhoods everywhere.

Chu’s Electric Somewhere will produce with Robbie Brenner and Arturo Thur de Koós for Mattel Studios, J.J. Abrams for his company Bad Robot, and Michael Bostick.

At this time, there is no set release window for the “Hot Wheels” movie. We’ll keep you posted on updates as the project develops.
