We were scratching our heads this morning as the official “Game of Thrones” Twitter account went a little…incendiary. Several tweets, containing only the fire / flame emoji were posted, and we could not figure out why. Shortly thereafter, the reason became apparent.

Production has officially kicked off on the “Game of Thrones” spinoff series “House of the Dragon.”

    • Emma D’Arcy as Princess Rhaenyra Targaryen.
    • Steve Toussaint as The Sea Snake.
    • Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen.
    • Olivia Cooke as Alicent Hightower.
    • Rhys Ifans as Otto Hightower.
    • Paddy Considine as King Viserys Targaryen.

Centering on the Targaryens, the series takes place roughly 300 years before the action of author George R. R. Martin‘s first novel from the “Song of Ice and Fire” saga, aka “Game of Thrones.”

We’ve had a couple of big casting announcements for the series, including Matt Smith as Prince Daemon Targaryen.

Martin and Ryan Condal (Colony, Hercules) will serve as co-creators on the series. Miguel Sapochnik and Condal will be showrunners, and the pair will also serve as executive producers along with Martin, Vince Gerardis, Sara Lee Hess, and Ron Schmidt.

And, most excitingly, “Game of Thrones” and “Westworld” composer Ramin Djawadi will score “House of the Dragon.”

We will of course let you know what we hear about this and other “Game of Thrones“ spinoff series as more news becomes available.

Mary Anne Butler (Mab) has been part of the fast-paced world of journalism since she was 15, getting her start in album reviews and live concert coverage for a nationally published (print) music magazine. She eventually transitioned to online media, writing for such sites as UGO/IGN, ComicsOnline, Geek Magazine, Ace of Geeks, Aggressive Comix (where she is still Editor-in-Chief), Bleeding Cool (where she was News Editor), and now Nerdbot as Editor-In-Chief. Over the past 10 years, she’s built a reputation at conventions across the globe as a cosplayer (occasionally), photographer (constantly), panelist and moderator (mostly), and reporter (always). Interviews, reviews, observations, breaking news, and objective reporting are the name of the game for the founder of Harkonnen Knife Fight, a Dune-themed band with an international presence. Though she be but little, she is fierce.
