Travel and adventure are back on the agenda. After years of lockdowns and travel restrictions, people are ready to jump back into the world. But if you’ve spent a lot of time at home, it can be difficult to pick just one place to visit.
If your travel list is long and decision making is difficult on which place you will start to make a Traveling Blog, then it might be safe to start with Denver, Colorado. Denver is a city known for its culture, outdoor lifestyle, and food.
And the Mile High City is on the rise. Post-pandemic optimism can be seen through the festivals that are resuming and new hotels and restaurants that are opening in Denver.
But one big draw for locals and visitors is legal cannabis. Colorado was one of the first states to legalize recreational cannabis use, so it’s a popular spot for that activity. Still, there are plenty of laws and regulations to be aware of if you’re going to Denver for that reason – including Colorado impaired driving laws.
Denver, Colorado
Colorado is known as “Colorful Colorado.” It’s a state proud of its natural beauty. And it should be. Colorado is home to high mountains, golden prairies, glistening lakes, and even a bountiful wine country.
Many people visit Colorado for the mountains – hiking and skiing are big activities here – and there are plenty to go around. Colorado has 6 famous mountain peaks including Pike’s Peak. And Denver itself doesn’t have any mountains to speak of, but there are dozens within just a short drive.
Denver is, however, the capital of Colorado. And it has plenty to offer, even if the mountains aren’t right in town.
Denver is known as the Mile High City because of its elevation. Plus, it has museums, breweries, professional sports teams, and a great food and music scene. To find the best spots, it’s best to take some locals’ advice.
Tourist Tips from Denver Locals
There are hundreds of different things to do in Denver, but some of the best spots and activities are known by locals. But finding those spots or activities can be tricker. Fortunately, there are a few places to check out and are highly recommended by Denver locals.
#1 – The Union Station
The first place on the list is Union Station in downtown Denver. While it may seem a little strange to visit a working train station, this train station is more than meets the eye.
After a major renovation, Union Station is a hub for locals in Denver. It has everything including a bar, a few cafes, an ice cream parlor, and a coffee shop. It has almost anything you could want, all in one spot. Locals recommend it constantly, and it’s well worth a visit.
#2 – Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre
If you’re looking for a little outdoor adventure, then Red Rocks Park and Amphitheatre is a must. The Amphitheater is well-known as it plays hosts to dozens of musical festivals and musicians every year.
But locals use it as a way to disconnect from city life and get into nature for the day. There are hiking trails throughout the park and around the amphitheater that locals love. Just make sure you’re in good medical condition to enjoy the hike. On top of that, however, there are activities like morning yoga on the rocks.
Even if rock concerts aren’t your thing, this rock park is a must see.
#3 – Morrison Town
After some time on the trails at Red Rocks Park, it’s time to visit the small town of Morrison Town. While outside of Denver city limits, Morrison Town is high on locals lists of places to hang out.
The biggest draw of Morrison Town, as suggested by locals, is the Morrison Inn. Locals claim it to be the best Mexican restaurant in the city. But on the weekends, Morrison Inn often hosts live music. So the culture and draw of Denver is alive and well in this small town, too.
#4 – Snooze
Brunch is a way of life in Denver, Colorado. Locals here know all the best spots to grab a late breakfast or early dinner, and one of the most talked about places is Snooze.
Snooze is known for its classic yet modern menu and fun atmosphere. But be warned, a weekend visit to Snooze often comes with a long wait. You can try to squeeze into any of the locations around Denver – there are multiple – but it’s very popular.
#5 – The Dairy Block
The Dairy Block is a rather new addition to locals’ lists of places to hit in Denver. This is a neighborhood of Denver that has been recently revitalized, but it’s bursting with restaurants and bars, markets, and even wall murals.
#6 – Cherry Creek
If you’re looking for something a little more upscale or fancy, then Cherry Creek is the place for you. This area of Denver is home to some of the best and most popular high-end dining. And yes, one of the most popular restaurants can be visited for brunch.
#7 – Highland
And if you’re in Denver, you can’t skip the brewery scene. While there are many different areas of Denver that house unique breweries, one of the best is Highland.
Not only does Highland have some of the best breweries in town, it also boasts some of those iconic murals and street art. Highland really is a great place to grab a craft beer and stroll through different boutiques and local shops.
And if you’re looking for a few more places to hit, try searching a few of the best travel apps. Some of these apps offer insider information and can help you find a great time.
Cannabis and Colorado
Denver is a great area of Colorado, and people often use it as a solo trip destination. Of course knowing how to travel alone is key, but Denver is a great place to “get your feet wet” for solo travel.
Whether you’re traveling alone or with friends, it’s important to know some of the local laws – especially when it comes to cannabis.
Cannabis Law: Dos and Don’ts
Even though recreational use of cannabis is legal in all areas of Colorado – including Denver – there are still things you cannot do. For example, using cannabis in public is not legal. If you choose to partake, you will need to be inside a licensed business or in a private residence.
Just like drinking alcohol, you must be 21 years or older to purchase and consume marijuana. And anyone over 21 years cannot possess more than 2 ounces of recreational marijuana. You are also not able to transport marijuana across state lines. So no stocking up to take back home.
The biggest concern is driving under the influence. Consuming marijuana more than the legal limit and driving can have serious consequences. If you are pulled over for suspected driving under the influence, you will need to pass a blood test with less than 5 nanograms of THC.
If you test with more than the legal limit, you can face fines, jail time, and the possibility of a revoked or suspended driver’s license. So if you do choose to take part in recreational use, make sure you know and understand Colorado cannabis laws.
Denver is a unique and incredible place. And if you do take a trip in the near future, make sure to check out the spots locals love and frequent. It’s worth it!
