Director & Cast Confirm That “Ginger Snaps” TV Series is Still Possible

The 2000’s Canadian horror film Ginger Snaps has developed a ravenous cult following over the years. In October 2020, it was announced that the franchise would be rebooted via a TV series. The project had Anna-Maria Ssemuyaba attached to write and original director John Fawcett executive producing. Then, silence.

Despite the lack of updates, stars Emily Perkins, Katharine Isabelle, and Fawcett say that the show is still on the table.

“That is still very much a hot topic right now,” Fawcett told Dread Central. “It’s a passion project of mine… it’s a work in progress, but it’s been a long and winding road. There is some heat and some creative minds working on this as we speak.”

    The Cast?

And would the two leads be returning for the reboot? “A combination of both,” says Isabelle. “There’s definitely more to be mined out of this story, out of the relationship of the girls.”

Which begs the question, how? Considering the fates of both characters in the first two films of the franchise. One was brought back in a sequel via hallucinations, then they are reunited in the 3rd film since it’s a prequel. But neither of these options really seems feasible, almost 26 years after the fact.

Even the cast seems a bit perplexed as to how they could return. “I would love to see where the story goes,” Perkins says. “Would we be talking about, I don’t know, their kids or…Well, they don’t have kids. Wait a second, that’s not really possible.”

The first film centers around Ginger (Isabelle) being bitten by a werewolf who smelled her menstrual blood. She and her sister Brigitte (Perkins) deal with the pressures of high school, while also hiding Ginger’s mutating body and increasingly violent outbursts. The film mixes teen angst with black humor and female rage. Creating a cocktail that both delighted and disgusted many viewers.

It spawned two 2004 sequels, Ginger Snaps 2: Unleashed and Ginger Snaps Back: The Beginning.

Ginger Snaps was recently rereleased on 4K by Lionsgate’s Vestron Video Collector’s Series. You can grab your copy here. We’ll keep you posted on updates about the series as it develops.
