It is humbling to meet cosplayers of any level of experience because of the wisdom that is built from their experiences. I’m happy to introduce you all to Brenda, a cosplayer from Mexico City.
Please tell our readers a little bit about yourself.
My name is Brenda… or Breen. I’m 24 years old and live in Mexico City. I’m an editor and have been cosplaying since 2017. (3 years woh)
My favorite characters to cosplay are from Disney and comics. For me it has been a whole journey to do what I do. I needed to learn how to do my make up, how to style a wig and where to look for the materials and persons that can help me with my costumes since I’m still learning how to do it.
Mi nombre es Brenda, o Breen, tengo 24 años, vivo en México, me dedico a la edición y en mis tiempos libres al cosplay, actividad que llevo haciendo desde hace 3 años (madre de Dios)
Me encanta hacer cosplay de personajes de Disney y de comics. Para mí el cosplay ha sido toda una aventura, tuve que aprender que tipo de materiales usar, dónde comprarlos, cómo hacer mi maquillaje, estilizar una peluca.. en fin mil cosas que aún estoy aprendiendo.
How would you define Cosplay?
To me, Cosplay is the opportunity to become my favorite characters and of course an opportunity to show all the creativity that one has.
El cosplay para mí es la oportunidad de convertirme en mis personajes favoritos, se aplica mucho la imaginación en esto
What’s your favorite part of it?
That would be the planning. I look for as many references as I can and put it all together so I can have a clear view of how the cosplay will be in order to make it real. (Which is a great excuse to watch movies, read comics or if possible play their video games )
After that, I do an investigation on how I will do the hair style and makeup that will work well and even what shoes could work.
Mi parte favorita es planear el cosplay, veo todas las referencias posibles del personaje (es una gran excusa para ver películas, cómics o la serie en la que aparece) y ordeno todo lo que pueda para que sea más fácil tener en mente cómo será el cosplay, hago una investigación para ver cómo será el peinado, el maquillaje, los zapatos que van más acorde al personaje y todo eso lo hago real.
How do you go about choosing characters?
For as simple as it may be, I have to like the character whether it is their design or their personality. There’s always something that catches my attention for me to want to bring them to life.
There’s not much point in doing a character I don’t like; I feel awkward in their clothes.
Por más simple que suene el personaje me tiene que gustar, ya sea en cuanto al diseño o a su personalidad, siempre hay algo que me llama la atención y es por lo que quiero traerlo a la realidad, para mí no tiene sentido hacer un personaje que no me gusta, me siento incomoda usando su ropa.
How do you go about getting into character?
Every time I put on a Cosplay I like to put something in the background that reminds me of them, whether it is some clips on YouTube or a song.
Siempre que me pongo un cosplay me gusta poner de fondo algo que me recuerde al personaje, si es de una película pongo mis partes favoritas en youtube y las veo mientras me arreglo.
What has been one of the coolest things to come from cosplaying?
There are a lot of things! Traveling is one of them. I’ve had the opportunity of going abroad and having the chance of meeting some wonderful people that I wouldn’t meet otherwise. I’ve also had the chance of helping in a hospital; something you need to have nerves of steel since you need to be at peace at all times.
Hay varias cosas, poder viajar es una; he tenido la oportunidad de viajar al extranjero para poder disfrutar del cosplay y he conocido personas maravillosas que en cualquier otra circunstancia nunca hubiera conocido! Tener la oportunidad de ayudar en hospitales es otra, es algo para lo que tienes que tener nervios de acero pues tienes que llevar tranquilidad.
Was there ever a cosplay you did that did not turn out how you wanted?
Of course! D.va and Rose Quartz are some that gave me the most trouble. From needing a lot of extra things to just not coming out as I expected. A part of me has a hard time seeing pictures of them.
¡Pero por supuesto! D.va y Rose Quartz son unos de los que más problemas me han causado, entre que he tenido que depender de varias cosas externas o que no salen como me gustaría una parte de mí ve con rencor esas fotos.
What did you do?
I had to adapt, use whatever I had at hand so I could get the most of them. I would love to make an upgrade of those cosplays because I know I can do better.
Tuve que adaptarme, usar lo que tenía a la mano para que saliera lo mejor posible, me encantaría poder hacer un upgrade de esos trajes porque sé que puedo hacerlo mejor.
Are there any MYTHS about the life of cosplayers you would like to clarify right now?
Even when cosplayers are in a sexy cosplay that doesn’t mean they are looking for any kind abuse or that you can talk to them in a rough way. Cosplayers are people, people that are really passionate. Not anyone will do this hard work. Cosplay is an art and everyone that is involved in this is an artist.
Aún cuando veas a un cosplayer con un traje sexy no significa que estén buscando abuso de ningún tipo o que les hables de forma brusca, los cosplayers son personas, personas muy apasionadas por lo que hacen, no cualquiera va a invertir tanto tiempo y esfuerzo en un traje y todo lo que implica, el cosplay es un arte y todos los que están involucrados en eso son artistas.
