When it comes to poorly reviewed films, I’ve talked at length about too many narratives unfolding at once as being a common mistake among a majority of them. “Dark Crimes” has the opposite problem (kind of) in that I’m not even entirely sure it has a one single narrative to begin with. Most of the time I can piecemeal a plot together from fragments of whatever is unfolding, but I’m not entirely sure “Dark Crimes” even has a singular plot to summarize. A brooding, grotesquely sexualized crime drama, the film is plagued by an indecipherable script and gloomy asthetic, clinging…

As someone with an unhealthy obsession with true crime and serial killers, “Eye for an Eye” (1996) is exactly the kind of revenge thriller I should have in top recommendations. On paper, it has the basic layout of a run of the mill mom turned revenge huntress. With its star studded cast, this should’ve been a no brainer for any fan of the genre. Unfortunately, “Eye For an Eye” executes its thin premise so poorly it feels exploitive, desperate to manipulate the emotional rollercoaster of a parent’s worst nightmare with a payoff that feels more shallow than cathartic. Directed by…

One of the most recognizable arcade games is getting a sequel of sorts 30 years later and coming to Console and PC. “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge” is a retro style, co-op side scroller game developed by Tribute Games, creator of “Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World Game” and some other nostalgic retro remakes over the last few years. Fans of the 1989 classic and its follow up “Turtles in Time” should be very excited to channel some old school turtle power, and take solace in the capabilities of the studio behind this new entry. The official gameplay synopsis is…

When it comes to 90s action films, there was about a 3 year stint where every single film followed the exact same formula. I don’t mean similar themes for the genre, I mean pretty much any action film from 1995 to 1997 is practically identical, down to the exact plot and characters as all of the other films before and after. “Executive Decision” is both elevated and held back by these constraints, falling victim to becoming “another one of these” rather than leaving its mark on the genre in any memorable way. There’s still enough to be enjoyed, but it…

Have you ever wondered what Nicolas Cage would look like with a low budget prosthetic nose, giant sunglasses, and an even worse wig while doing what I can only assume is a variation of Tony Clifton if he were a mobster would look-like? Well, “Arsenal” answers the questions that no one, absolutely no one has ever asked or wanted to see. It’s one thing for Uwe Boll to make an unwatchable video game adaption. It’s quite another for someone to make a sequel to a 1993 box office bomb on purpose and fill it with recognizable faces. “Arsenal” is meandering…

I’ve said this many times before in the last few weeks, but it bares repeating: I will continue to champion LaKeith Stanfield’s latest performance as a criminally snubbed nominee for his role in “Judas and the Black Messiah” until someone makes it right. Stanfield is an actor who, like some other previous entries into the series, is on the brink of greatness. He seemed to show up out of nowhere and immediately make a name for himself as a rising star, and has earned his place among those who deserve a spotlight for their underrated work. Award season snubs aside,…
