“Star Wars” Spinoff “Kenobi” Still Happening Says Deborah Chow

The poor on again off again relationship of the Disney+ “Star Wars” spinoff series based on Jedi Master Obi Wan Kenobi is like a high school couple who just can’t get it together. You WANT to see it work, but after so much drama and back and fourth about he said she said, you’re ready to step away from hoping for awhile.

Enter one Deborah Chow, who will be directing the possible “Kenobi” series for Disney+ following her stint on “The Mandalorian.”

Director Deborah Chow on the set of “The Mandalorian,” shot by BY FRANÇOIS DUHAMEL for Vanity Fair.

Back when Chow was announced for the gig, Lucasfilm President Kathleen Kennedy said in an official statement to Star Wars.com:

“We really wanted to select a director who is able to explore both the quiet determination and rich mystique of Obi-Wan in a way that folds seamlessly into the Star Wars saga. Based on her phenomenal work developing our characters in The Mandalorian, I’m absolutely confident Deborah is the right director to tell this story.”

Reports and rumors have been swirling non stop about the series, ranging from ‘creative differences’ creating serious contention on production, to star Ewan McGregor outright leaving.

Just this past weekend, Chow was part of the ATX Television Festival’s panel about “The Mandalorian,” and offered a brief but promising comment about the show. “We have a little more to do than that, but we’re in development,” she said, following a question to fellow “Star Wars” director Taika Waititi.

Like we said, this isn’t exactly a breaking news comment, but it is proof positive that things are still moving forward for a tale of Obi Wan Kenobi.

According to Star Wars official press releases, Hossein Amini (“The Alienist,” “Drive“) is on board to write the series. Chow, Amini, and McGregor will serve as Executive Producers, alongside Kathleen Kennedy, Tracey Seaward (“The Queen“) and John Swartz (“Rogue One: A Star Wars Story“). Jason McGatlin, Lucasfilm’s Executive Vice President Production, will serve as co-producer.

We will of course let you know what we hear about any additional developments about this, and other “Star Wars” news.
