It’s not often when you can say, “the wait is over” before a new season of a show actually begins airing, but with “Rick and Morty“ it’s a special case. Following the departure of series co-creator and voice of the titular characters Justin Roiland, questions arose about what would happen next. The answer was that the show would continue with Roiland’s characters being recast. After months of speculation, we know what those voices sound like.
One of the first things we hear from new Rick’s mouth is, “Hey look, Morty, I’m a leg!” To be fair, it doesn’t sound EXACTLY like the Rick we know, but it’s not distractingly different either. As for Morty, when we hear him ask “Any progress?” and when he says, “I’m telling you man, you’re making a big mistake here,” it sounds pretty spot-on. Will it be enough to quell the doubters and naysayers? Well, you’ll always have the diehard contingent that will not accept anything but the original, but we suspect fans will generally be okay with things.
A cursory look through the YouTube comments on the trailer are indicative of the above statement. There are some Roiland supporters decrying his ousting, while many others are saying the recasting is just fine. What’s kind of funny about the discourse though is how little anyone is discussing the content of the trailer itself. The madcap, weird, and violent shenanigans of the titular duo look to be on par with previous seasons, but right now, it’s all about the voices.
It wasn’t an easy position for adult swim to be in. Roiland was charged with two felonies. Recasting him was likely the most profitable thing to do while also acknowledging the network could not continue a working relationship with him. Thus we have a recasting which is reportedly two different voice actors, whereas Roiland had voiced both Rick and Morty himself. As of yet, these actors have not been identified.
The rest of the season seven trailer, set to Motorhead’s “Ace of Spades” features more of the typical interdimensional travel and adventures, mashed together in an incomprehensible way. There’s all kinds of alien beings, different worlds, destruction, and Rick’s spaghetti that seem to be standard fare for the series. So if you’re expecting more of the same, then you’re probably not going to be disappointed.
The seventh season of “Rick and Morty” premiers on October 15th on adult swim.
