Since the late 1970s, when anime games first arrived in the U.S., the growing fanbase has always debated what makes it so unique. Anime games that evolved from the animated series are characterized by new worlds, strong visuals, 2D striking animation creating a feeling of movement, vividly bright colors, and doe-eyed protagonists. While anime games have captured the attention of millions of gamers globally, some features make certain great anime games stand out in the crowd.

So, what are the defining features that make an anime game great? Here are some features that can make a difference in keeping gamers hooked and in a game’s long-term popularity.

    1. Mimics the Anime Show

Successful games that are based on anime will mimic the original show. One example is One Piece Odyssey, which mimics one of the longest-running anime ever. It’s an action-adventure role-playing game with gamesors controlling the Straw hat pirates exploring a mysterious location and meeting sinister adversaries. For gamers that love mobile anime games, Seven Deadly Sins: Grand Cross mimics the anime series The Seven Deadly Sins allowing gamers to relive favorite anime moments.

    2. Characters

Great anime games have interesting, complex characters that are memorable. No one enjoys an uninteresting character. Great anime games require creating characters that players can relate to and that are visually interesting. Characters must also develop over time, and their development needs to be believable. They often choose the more difficult path to accomplishing a task and struggle. Some may even be emotional, but the most popular anime characters learn from their efforts when resolving conflicts. Players love being entertained but equally enjoy being touched and finding encouragement.

    3. Story

An original plot will always draw in gamers. Even if anime games are fun, when backstories are included that involve more characters and more lots, it can keep gamers involved. An event or several events that may initially appear minor and develop gradually throughout the game need to be introduced. An occasional unexpected twist in the game’s plot will also keep things interesting. If the game proceeds in one direction and suddenly changes course, this can increase the challenge and prevent gamers from knowing what’s coming. An example is the Doki Doki Literature Club, which might appear as a predictable dating game when, in reality, there’s a nightmare just waiting to be experienced. It’s violent and horrific.

    4. Visuals

While gameplay is fundamental, game visuals are essential because graphics are what gamers deal with for the entire game duration. High-quality animation can induce players to feel one with the game they play. Characters and locations must be well-designed and detailed, with movements executed agilely. Play Guilty Gear Strive to experience impressive anime visuals.

    5. Location

Television and film bring us into other worlds and conduct our journey. Games are unique in that they are interactive and allow players to explore. Gamers will want to explore everything the location offers and all the elements in a place that attracts a gamer’s attention. Areas should feel alive, and exploration should bring value.

    6. Action

Exciting battles are among the things that anime fans love most. High-stakes action involving gods, ninjas, cyborgs, and soldiers that is over the top makes for a great anime game. Blockbuster action is a feature of the best anime games, with the pace sustaining fans’ attention. Dragon Ball Fighter 2, which often ends up in best anime game lists, is one example of a great fighting game with its rapid pace, sheer energy, and extraordinary visuals.

    7. Adventure

Although action is essential, adventure is equally so. The Dragon Quest series of anime games make adventure a primary component. The Dragon Quest 11 game shows how an imaginary world and its characters take you on a real adventure. The game’s lavish 3D locations are stunning and evocative, and gamers may wish they existed for real. Unique elements introduced into a gaming narrative will catch gamers’ attention and might be the attractive element that keeps them returning as they can’t find it anywhere else.

    8. Enemies

Having the proper antagonist is vital, especially when battling. Games must have an enemy or enemies to defeat. Street Fighter or Mortal Kombat may quickly enter the discussion when considering fighting anime games, but true villains are a significant attraction. Consider Vinland Saga’s ‘Askeladd’ or Demon Slayer’s ‘Akaza.’ With devastating combat abilities and a love of fatal rivalries, what’s not to like?

    9. Balance

To enjoy a game win, there must be a balance between the forces of good and evil. Finding that perfect balance between challenge and reward makes the best Anime games so good. If games are too complicated, they leave gamers frustrated, while if they are too easy, they become dull. One of the challenges of level development is creating a gradual escalation to keep players enthralled.

    10. Level Development

Levels are vital to the success of any anime game design. Well-developed stories keep players engaged while helping to push the storyline forward. Fantastic level development entails keeping players involved and wanting to practice and succeed without rendering them frustrated.

    11. Puzzles

Puzzle-solving elements, especially those used for escape options, can up a game’s interest. Consider the Anime game ‘999’ or Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors. This Anime game places players in a terrible situation as a captive with eight others on a cruise ship. While gamers may explode when failing to obey commands, this game includes lots of puzzle-solving to escape an untimely end.

    12. Fun

Even with the best graphics in the world and an exciting storyline, games still need to be fun. Without the fun component, it will be like watching a movie instead of actively participating and interacting. In the final analysis, it’s the fun that counts when gaming.
