An Indonesian zoo patron walked a little too close to the orangutan enclosure. Things very quickly went from bad to worse…for the man. The primate quickly grabbed the man’s shirt, pulling him closer to the cage.
The man, who was identified as Hasan Arifin, broke zoo protocol by venturing outside the boundaries. Obviously, one should not ignore rules about this kind of thing.
While this could be seen as an act of malice, orangutans are not generally aggressive creatures. It leaves one to wonder if there was some type of provocation other than just being too close. The orangutan is named Tina, and being female, it’s also possible she just wanted to check him out closer. It’s not unheard of for primates to be attracted to humans.
One study did prove primates are more attracted to jerks than those who play nicely. Maybe Tina thought the man looked like an appropriate playmate?
The Kasang Kulim Zoo manager issued a statement via social media.
