We are delighted to share this bit of news. For whatever reason, this morning HBO Max decided to release the opening 7 minutes of “Mortal Kombat.” Originally, the film was going to bow this past weekend, but Warner Bros. Pictures pushed it to this coming weekend.

You can watch the R-rated film’s first 7 minutes blow.

MMA fighter Cole Young, accustomed to taking a beating for money, is unaware of his heritage—or why Outworld’s Emperor Shang Tsung has sent his best warrior, Sub-Zero, an otherworldly Cryomancer, to hunt Cole down. Fearing for his family’s safety, Cole goes in search of Sonya Blade at the direction of Jax, a Special Forces Major who bears the same strange dragon marking Cole was born with. Soon, he finds himself at the temple of Lord Raiden, an Elder God and the protector of Earthrealm, who grants sanctuary to those who bear the mark. Here, Cole trains with experienced warriors Liu Kang, Kung Lao and rogue mercenary Kano, as he prepares to stand with Earth’s greatest champions against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe. But will Cole be pushed hard enough to unlock his arcana—the immense power from within his soul—in time to save not only his family, but to stop Outworld once and for all?”

“Mortal Kombat” stars Ludi Lin (“Black Mirror“) as Liu Kang, Jessica McNamee (“The Meg“) as Sonya Blade, Joe Taslim (“Warrior“) as Sub-Zero, Hiroyuki Sanada (“Westworld“) as Scorpion, Mehcad Brooks (“Supergirl“) as Jax, Mel Jarnson as Nitara, Sisi Stringer as Mileena, Lewis Tan (“Wu Assassins,” “Into the Badlands“) as Cole Young, stuntman Max Huang as Kung Lao, Josh Lawson (“Superstore“) as Kano, Chin Han (“Marco Polo“) as Shang Tsung, and Asano Tadanobu (“47 Ronin“) as Raiden.

Simon McQuoid is directing this R-rated reboot. James Wan and Todd Garner are producing.

“Mortal Kombat” is set to hit HBO Max on April 23rd, 2021.

Mary Anne Butler (Mab) has been part of the fast-paced world of journalism since she was 15, getting her start in album reviews and live concert coverage for a nationally published (print) music magazine. She eventually transitioned to online media, writing for such sites as UGO/IGN, ComicsOnline, Geek Magazine, Ace of Geeks, Aggressive Comix (where she is still Editor-in-Chief), Bleeding Cool (where she was News Editor), and now Nerdbot as Editor-In-Chief. Over the past 10 years, she’s built a reputation at conventions across the globe as a cosplayer (occasionally), photographer (constantly), panelist and moderator (mostly), and reporter (always). Interviews, reviews, observations, breaking news, and objective reporting are the name of the game for the founder of Harkonnen Knife Fight, a Dune-themed band with an international presence. Though she be but little, she is fierce.
