It is with an incredible amount of sadness that we report the passing of Dolly Parton. This is a truly just, tragic day that leaves us reeling. Not solely us either; this is the kind of passing that the world mourns. Dolly Parton was not just a country musician; she was an icon. She transcended genre and medium.
Dolly gave voice to songs like “Jolene,” “Coat of Many Colors,” and “I Will Always Love You.” The latter of which was made even more famous when covered by Whitney Houston. She didn’t just sing and play these songs either; she wrote them. In fact, she may be one of the most prolifically talented songwriters in popular music history. There are so many songs we could mention here. “9 to 5,” “Baby I’m Burnin’,” “Me and Little Andy,” the list is extensive.
More Than Music
Unlike other country music stars, she found world popularity too. Her 2014 set at Glastonbury is a testament to her global acclaim. Her appearances on film and television added to that. She could act, sing, and had a charisma that extended beyond her voice. Very few people can lay claim to that kind of star power, but Dolly had it.
She also became an icon for human rights. While not diving directly into politics, Dolly was an advocate for women’s rights and a strong ally of the LGBT community. Her view on God and religion included a belief that all people are created equal. It made her unique amongst many of her peers and helped codify her as a figure that anyone could respect. Basically, if you didn’t like Dolly Parton as a person, the problem was more likely with you than with her.
But now, we mourn. Her passing was announced on her official Instagram by her nephew. He states that this is something that Dolly had planned years ago, for him to make the announcement. His tone is measured and professional. He’s not cold by any means; he reads like someone who knew this was going to happen and is ready to say what needs to be said.
We don’t know the details of her passing. They are not ours to know anyway. If Dolly’s family wants to share, the world will be ready to listen. Out of privacy and respect, we’re only going to say how sad we are that she’s no longer here. As her nephew elegantly put it, she lived her life in the spotlight. She wore those heavy rhinestones, and now she has a chance to rest comfortably.
