In 2017, Warner Bros. Pictures (WB) announced they were developing an animated movie based on the DC Comics title, “Watchmen.” Since then, there has been very little information outside of another announcement at San Diego Comic-Con in 2023, giving it a 2024 release window and an R-rating.  On June 13th, DC and WB surprised everyone by dropping a trailer for the two-part film out of nowhere. MGM+ is adapting Stephen King’s 2019 novel “The Institute” into a limited-run series. Mary-Louise Parker (“Weeds”) and Ben Barnes (“Shadow and Bone”) will star in the thriller. The Plot “The Institute” will run for eight episodes. The plot centers around a yet-to-be-cast 12-year-old genius named Luke Ellis. Luke is kidnapped and wakes up in a facility known only as The Institute, full of kids who were abducted. Competitive eater Joey Chestnut has been barred from participating in Nathan’s Famous Fourth of July International Hot Dog-Eating Contest. This took many by surprise since he has won 16 times in a row since 2016. But fear not! For Chestnut will gorge again, in a face-off against rival competitive eater Takeru Kobayashi. (Who is actually coming out of retirement for this.) On June 11th, 1933, the late great Jerome Silberman was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The world would eventually know him better as Gene Wilder. He starred in movies like “Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory,” “Stir Crazy,” “Blazing Saddles,” “Young Frankenstein,” “The Producers,” and many other classics.  In honor of what would have been his 91st birthday, Netflix has added 2023 documentary “Remembering Gene Wilder” to their streaming service. AMC Networks is once again expanding its Anne Rice Immortal Universe with another live-action series. This time, with “The Talamasca.” It is the third series based on the late author’s works at AMC, along with “Interview with the Vampire” and “Mayfair Witches.” The upcoming show will be about a secretive society that tracks and observes witches, vampires, werewolves, and other supernatural occurances.  Fans of the other two series have already met some of its members. The man behind “Terrifier” and “Terrifier 2”’s villain Art The Clown, David Howard Thornton, will be bringing us terror in a new form… Steamboat Willie. Thornton has joined the cast of the Steamboat Willie horror reimagining “Screamboat.”  Steamboat Willie is the earliest version of Disney’s legendary Mickey Mouse character. The character entered the public domain on January 1st, allowing it to be turned into a horror parody like many other copyright-free IPs before it. Since 1981, actor Tom Cruise has lit up the big screen with iconic roles in films like “A Few Good Men,” “Jerry Maguire,” and the “Top Gun” and “Mission: Impossible” film franchises. Over the past decade, the fanbase around the 2014 Cruise-led film, “Edge Of Tomorrow” has also been growing. While the movie didn’t take the box office by storm, like many films, it has found its audience in the home video/streaming market. Fresh off his Academy Award-winning short “The Wonderful Story of Henry Sugar,” it looks like Wes Anderson is setting out to build another A-list cast for his upcoming film, “The Phoenician Scheme.” The new movie will be a tale of father-daughter espionage. It is said to have a darker tone than audiences are used to seeing in Anderson’s previous works. “The Phoenician Scheme” recently wrapped filming in Germany, with Anderson directing from a script co-written with frequent collaborator Roman Coppola. The cast already includes Benicio del Toro (“The French Dispatch”), Michael Cera (“Sacramento”), Bill Murray (“Ghostbusters”), and Mia Threapleton (“Scoop”). …

The upcoming movie “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin” will be an R-rated version of our favorite heroes on the half shell. Tom Waltz, co-creator of the comic book it’s based on, wants to see actress Judith Hoag return as April O’Neil. Hoag portrayed reporter April O’Neil in the 1990 live-action adaptation of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.” Despite the movie’s rubber-masked hokiness, it holds a special nostalgic spot for many fans. Filmmaker Rian Johnson (“Star Wars: Episode VIII–The Last Jedi,” “Poker Face”) has confirmed his upcoming movie “Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery” has begun shooting. This will be the third installment of his hugely popular “Knives Out” film series.  On the morning of June 10th, Johnson posted an image to X (formally Twitter) of Daniel Craig, who plays the beloved detective Benoit Blanc, on set.
