“Birds of Prey” director Cathy Yan will executive produce and direct a live-action adaptation of Yasutaka Tsutsui’s novel “Paprika.” This new series is a partnership between Amazon Studios and Hivemind, though Amazon hasn’t officially confirmed the project. The 1993 novel is considered to be Tsutsui’s masterpiece.  “Paprika” revolves around the Institute for Psychiatric Research, which has developed a device to invade people’s dreams. When a prototype is stolen, it is up to psychotherapist Atsuko Chiba to find and battle whoever took it. This leads her into altered states between dreams and reality, all while the culprit uses this device to…

In the early 2000s, the BlackBerry came onto the market as one of world’s first smartphones. It had an insanely fast rise in popularity, only to fall just as quickly and hard as it rose. “BlackBerry” will explore the lifetime of the device, as well as its parent company, Research in Motion. The Canadian company ended up buried in legal disputes, only to eventually lose its market share to brands like Apple and Samsung. Expect the film to also focus on the business relationship between co-founders Mike Lazaridis and Jim Balsillie. Matt Johnson (“The Dirties”) is directing. The cast is led…

Earlier this summer, “Knives Out” writer/director Rian Johnson announced the film’s highly anticipated follow-up. Called “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” the title is a direct reference to The Beatles song of the same name. This announcement came along with a teaser, boasting a star-studded cast. But Johnson wouldn’t necessarily call it a sequel. Instead, he calls it a “second installment in a narratively cohesive universe.”  “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery” is set in Greece, and will have detective Benoit Blanc (Daniel Craig) returning to solve another murder mystery. The plot centers around tech billionaire Miles Bron (Edward Norton)…

Entomologists in Washington state confirmed an atlas moth was spotted in Bellevue last month. A resident saw it on the side of their garage, and took a picture before it was reported to The Washington State Department of Agriculture by a University of Washington professor.  They are asking residents to report any other sightings of the insect. Spotting one should be easy considering they are one of the world’s largest moths, boasting an impressive 10-inch wing span. It is second in size only to the white witch moth, which has a 14-inch span. The atlas moth’s wing size and pattern…

It seems childhood classic “Sesame Street” is the latest casualty in the HBO Max purge. Until recently, 650 “Sesame Street” episodes were available to stream on HBO Max, but now it is down to 456. The biggest hit is to the first 38 seasons of the show, which are now whittled down to just a 29 episode offering.  Most of those episodes are a random mixture between seasons 1, 5, and 7. Episodes from season 39 onward are still available in their entirety.  That breakdown makes sense because season 39 was around 2015, when HBO and Sesame Workshop partnered up. HBO…

Sony Pictures Television has acquired the rights to Weird NJ Magazine, and are developing it into a live-action horror-comedy series. The magazine was created by Mark Moran and Mark Sceurman, and first published in 1993. Weird NJ gained a huge following, and recently published their 58th issue. Moran and Sceurman have become experts on the garden state’s folklore and unique history.  It even spawned the much broader “Weird U.S.,” which Sony has also acquired the rights to. The…

In news that will shock absolutely no one, the new “Hellraiser” reboot will be rated R. The rating is due to “strong bloody horror violence and gore, language throughout, some sexual content, and brief graphic nudity.” Which sounds totally on brand for this horror franchise, which was created by Clive Barker. This new “Hellraiser” is described as a “loyal, yet evolved re-imagining of Clive Barker’s 1987 horror classic.” Barker himself is involved as an executive producer, and has had nothing but positive things to say about the experience. The film is directed by David Bruckner, who has done the feature-length…
