The horror series Zona Merah is being adapted into a feature film courtesy of Screenplay Films. Sidharta Tata and Fajar Martha Santosa will co-direct, with Tata returning as a screenwriter. Santosa will be in charge of the development process.

The series is set in Rimbalaya, Indonesia, during an outbreak of the living dead. Survivor Maya must race against time to find her missing sister before the city turns into a red zone.

The film is reported to move the universe in a darker, more unforgiving direction. These survivors’ fight to go on must become more desperate and brutal to defeat the undead.

Aghniny Haque, Andri Mashadi, Maria Theodore, Devano Danendra, and Lukman Sardi will reprise their roles. Alongside new additions like Luna Maya, Bryan Domani, Shindy Huang, Myesha Lin, and Derby Romero.

“As an executive producer, I see ‘Zona Merah’ as having tremendous potential – not only creatively, but also in terms of its positioning within the industry. This is an important step in bringing a local IP to the next level, both in production scale and audience reach,” said star and producer Maya.

“‘Zona Merah’ already has a strong foundation in its world-building and storytelling from the series. With the film, we aim to elevate everything to the next level – emotionally, in terms of conflict scale, and in the overall visual experience. We want audiences to feel unsafe in their cinema seats – darker and more unsettling than anything we’ve created before,” adds Tata.

Production will run from April to May 2026, with the shooting planned to start on April 7th. We’ll keep you posted on updates about this project as it continues to develop.
