When the “Community” movie was first announced, many fans noticed series staples Chevy Chase (Pierce), Donald Glover (Troy), and Yvette Nicole Brown (Shirley) were missing from the cast. While it’s HIGHLY unlikely we see Chase in anything related to the sitcom again, there is still hope for Glover and Brown’s return.
“I think that Donald is coming, based on word of mouth, but it’s just the deal isn’t official or wasn’t official. It would be difficult to really commit to doing this thing without Donald,” series creator Dan Harmon said. “So I believe he is coming back. I think if there’s names missing from a list, it’s because the names that are on the list, their deals are agreed upon enough that it’s OK to say they are on the list, and anybody that’s not on a list, it’s just not the case yet. So there is nothing official about anybody being out.”
This statement is backed up by the fact that Brown has been excitedly posting about the movie on her social media accounts. She’s remained pretty quiet about her possible involvement, though. At the 2020 reunion panel, Glover said he would be game for a movie if it were to happen. While obviously none of this is clear ‘yes’ all signs seem to point to at least Troy and Shirley returning.
This brings us to Pierce Hawthorne, played by comedian Chevy Chase. Chase and Harmon had a massive falling out during the show, and their relationship seems to remain rocky. During a panel at during New York Comic-Con (NYCC), Harmon quipped about the legality of Chase’s return. “I don’t even know if it’s legal for him to come back. That may be out of my hands. There may be something I sign for with an insurance company,” Harmon said. (Though we would like to point out Pierce dies in season 5 so would him returning even make sense?)
