“Pacific Rim” Series Lands at Amazon MGM Studios

It’s a good time period to be a fan of Kaiju. Those of us old enough to live through the disaster that was 1998’s “Godzilla“ feared that would spell the end of giant monster movies. For a while, it did. Thanks to films like “Cloverfield,” and the reemergence of the actual “Godzilla” franchise, Kaiju are back and better than ever. Some of this may not have been possible though without “Pacific Rim.”

Oscar winner Guillermo del Toro‘s love letter to giant monster films gave Legendary Pictures a new franchise to play with. With the help of Amazon MGM Studios, the property will be making the transition to the small screen for an upcoming series.

Cailee Spaeny, “Pacific Rim: Uprising” Legendary Pictures

First reported in 2024, a prequel television series to “Pacific Rim” was being developed. The production company partnered with Eric Heisserer and his company Chronology. There is already a “Pacific Rim” anime series and a less than stellar video game. But the world del Toro crafted with writer Travis Beacham is rich with areas and lore to explore.

Amazon MGM Studios has been acquiring a number of franchises including James Bond and “Highlander.” While “Pacific Rim” is still a property of Legendary, Amazon MGM’s involvement fits with their trend of relying on established IP.

As of this time, no details have been announced as to when to expect the series or who might be appearing in it. Aside from it being a prequel to the first movie, we don’t fully know what to expect. Except of course giant Jaegers beating the living daylights out of giant monsters. We’ll let you know what we hear about this and other news.
