After laying dormant for almost 17 years, the “28 Days Later” horror franchise is picking up steam. The long-awaited sequel “28 Years Later” will hit theaters on June 20th, 2025, kicking off a brand new trilogy. The next entry, “28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple,” has just been given a January 16th, 2026 release date.

This means it will hit theaters just six months after “28 Years Later,” a welcome change of pace for fans.

    “The Bone Temple”

“The Bone Temple” was shot back-to-back with its predecessor but is directed by Nia DaCosta (“Candyman”), from a script by series staple Alex Garland. It will keep some of the same cast with Jodie Comer (“Killing Eve”), Aaron Taylor-Johnson (“Kraven The Hunter”), Ralph Fiennes (“The Menu,” “The Return”) confirmed to return.

Producers include Garland, franchise creator Danny Boyle, Andrew Macdonald, Peter Rice, and Bernard Bellew. Series star Cillian Murphy will executive produce.

    “28 Years Later”

Little is known about the plot of “The Bone Temple,” but it’s assumed it will follow the events of “28 Years Later.” That film is set almost three decades after the rage virus escaped a biological weapons laboratory. Despite a strict quarantine still being in effect, some have found ways to exist among the infected.

“28 Years Later,” will follow one such group of survivors who live on a small island. Their refuge is only attached to the mainland via one causeway that they must defend at all costs. When one person leaves the island on a mission to the mainland, they discover secrets, wonders, and horrors that have mutated the infected and survivors alike.

“28 Years Later” hits theaters on June 20th, 2025, and you can check out the first trailer below. “28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple,” is currently slated for a January 16th, 2026 release. We’ll keep you posted on updates about both projects as they become available.
