Death comes for us all. It’s an uneasy fact that we all have to face. And even though it can come for any of us at any time, you don’t really expect it to seek out a 36-year-old actress. But on Sunday, August 16th, the world lost Hayden Panettiere. She was an incredibly versatile talent who deserves to be remembered for performances across different media. She should also be remembered with understanding and sympathy for the power that addiction holds over people.

A Child Star With a Gifted Voice

While Panettiere was never in the upper echelon of award-winning talent, she made up for that with the kind of versatility that other actors could only aspire to. She was a talented singer and voice actor in addition to her on-camera presence. She made a mark on video games as well through her voice and motion capture work. Because her career began as a child, she has a filmography that spans three decades. That’s an absolute rarity in an industry where many children don’t have a continued career as they age.

Panettiere began her career with appearances on the soap operas One Life to Live and Guiding Light. Her voice got her parts in two Disney animated features. She made her film debut with A Bug’s Life and appeared in the oft-forgotten Dinosaur in 2000. That year would also mark her first substantial live-action film appearance in Remember the Titans. For the most part, her movie career wasn’t spectacular. She appeared in some lesser movies, such as I Love You, Beth Cooper, and Fireflies in the Garden, before getting a bigger and better part in Scream 4 as Kirby Reed. She reprised the role in Scream VI, which will ultimately end up being her final major, big-screen role.

Hayden Panettiere on Television & Video Games

Television was much kinder to her. Panettiere got her major break in the NBC show Heroes. She would then translate that success to more acclaim on Nashville. The show’s musical focus gave her a chance to put her singing voice on full display. That success cycled back into real life with Panettiere being a major presence on the soundtrack albums for the show. She ended up with several top 40 hits on the American country charts.

In the middle of filming Nashville, Hayden Panettiere was involved in another project that is fondly remembered by video gamers. She played the main role of Sam in the PlayStation 4 horror title, Until Dawn. The branching narrative of the game was unique unto itself. It was amplified in quality by the motion capture work and performance of Panettiere. Prior to this, she was known in the gaming world for being the original voice of Kairi in the Kingdom Hearts franchise. She held the role for three titles and also voiced Xion in Dream Drop Distance.

    Darker Times

After her time on Nashville wrapped up in 2018, things took a pretty bad turn for Panettiere. Her marriage to boxer Wladimir Klitschko had fallen apart. She had been suffering from postpartum depression since her daughter was born in 2014. She would also reveal her problems with alcohol and opioids. Klitschko was granted sole custody of their child, and Panettiere wouldn’t have any major Hollywood projects again for five years, until she appeared in Scream VI.

At the time of this writing, Panettiere’s cause of death has not been officially stated. Reports have indicated that it was a possible cardiac arrest resulting from a drug overdose. Whether it was or not, it opens up a conversation about drug addiction and relapses that really needs to be had. We exist in a society where addiction is still stigmatized and seen as a failing of moral fiber or willpower. But the chemical balance in the brain that is impacted by addiction is such a powerful thing; not everyone can just conquer that. And if they do, it’s sometimes just a temporary one.

    A Matthew Perry Comparison

At the time of this writing, we’re almost 3 years removed from the passing of Matthew Perry. The former Friends actor was also well-known for his battles with addiction. He spent many of his final years trying to provide encouragement and support to others. Despite this, a large amount of the drug ketamine was found in his system and was the main contributing factor to his passing. The details that would later be uncovered about the illegal means and desperation to acquire that ketamine are horrifying. Whatever side that Perry was showing to the public was very clearly masking a tremendous and ultimately fatal problem.

Does this make him a bad person? Does it undercut his efforts to help others? Of course not. We are not perfect beings, and we exist in our own hypocrisy and contradictions sometimes. Someone in Perry’s position may have a hard time admitting to a relapse or treatment not working because of how that looks to others. But that’s not fair to their own humanity. We often praise people for being honest about their addictions, but we’re less welcoming to news about relapses. The public perception is not that a relapse is part of an ongoing battle, but instead it’s a failure. That perception needs to end.

How We View Addicts is Destructive

If Panettiere had come out recently and talked about a continuing drug problem, how would people have viewed her? Would she be getting job offers? Would her memoir that was released in May have received any press coverage? Maybe she would have been encouraged by fans and colleagues to get help. Or maybe people would have completely written her off as never being stable again. We’ll never know; all the possibility of her career and talent ended on Sunday. Again, while it’s not officially stated that she died of an overdose, the takeaway about how we view addicts and addiction is true.

Life is a frighteningly complicated mess of joy, pain, happiness, sorrow, pleasure, and heartache. To live is to know pain. But we would also not know happiness if we did not know pain. Coping with that, though, is the part that trips up so many. Everyone turns to something to get through the rough patches. Some methods are just more or less destructive than others. It’s much easier to look at someone else’s life and say what they’re doing wrong than it is to self-reflect. With the passing of Hayden Panettiere, the world has lost a wonderful talent. Let us not lose our compassion as well because of how she might have passed.
