This year’s D23: The Ultimate Fan Event piled the theme park reveals, announcements, and updates as high as Cinderella’s Castle. But the Walt Disney Company’s biennial, 3-day fan expo saved many of its biggest surprises for its dedicated Disney Experiences Showcase. From a Tomorrowland reimagining reveal for Disneyland to the Dreamfinder’s return at Epcot, there was no shortage of magical news.
But the pixie dust really dropped during the showcase’s finale, when details of the Magic Kingdom‘s Villains-themed expansion were shared. The highly – or wickedly – anticipated land was announced at 2024’s D23 event, but news has been pretty scarce since then.

Official Name Keeps It Simple…and Scary
For starters, Disney confirmed the ambitious, large-scale area’s official name. Taking an if-it-ain’t-broke-don’t-fix-it approach, the baddie-inhabited expansion will stick with its interim title, “Villains Land.” Of course, this also keeps with the Magic Kingdom’s existing naming convention, joining the likes of Fantasyland and Adventureland.
But its name isn’t the only thing that’s remaining untouched. The land – promised to be similar in size to Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge – is also retaining its original, darker concept. Two years ago, fans were excited by the proposed theme and supporting concept art, which was surprisingly spooky.
Decidedly darker than the park’s other lands, its initial reveal was heavily inspired by Disney’s classic animated evil-doers, such as Maleficent and the Wicked Queen. But two years of widespread rumors and speculation followed. This included a report that the concept was being traded for a watered-down, family-friendly approach, which didn’t sit well with fans.

Be Careful What You Wish For
Thankfully, the D23 update vanquished those unfounded rumors like a prince besting a fire-breathing dragon. If anything, Disney’s Imagineers are doubling down on their initial, creepy concept, with immersive theming, scary storytelling, and thrilling attractions.
New art and models suggest a foreboding forest evocative of the terrifying woods from Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. The dark fairytale supporting this spine-tingling setting involves another Snow White staple: A wishing well. But the Villains Land wishing well was apparently erected on the wrong side of Maleficent’s castle, as it’s been corrupted by an evil wish. As the terrifying tale goes, that corruption leads to the entire land being poisoned by dark magic. Of course, this unfortunate series of events also sees the land luring unsavory sorts from all corners of Disney’s grimmest lore.
This haunting premise will inform everything else within the expansion, from dedicated villain lairs to shopping and dining options. But most importantly, it will shape the area’s two major attractions, which D23 spilled further details on.

Ambitious Attractions Inspired by Dark Villains Vibes
The first ride is an exhilarating roller coaster that promises to put brave guests face-to-face with Sleeping Beauty‘s Maleficent. Winding in and around the Mistress of All Evil’s menacing, mountaintop fortress, the attraction’s said to be one of Disney’s most ambitious.
Joining the groundbreaking thrill ride is a second, equally foreboding experience that invites guests into the Evil Queen‘s creepy catacombs. This attraction will be an interior dark ride inspired by the villain’s iconic Magic Mirror and its powerful abilities. Beneath the Evil Queen’s palace, visitors will be transported to a mysterious, mystical realm inhabited by some of Disney’s most beloved – and feared – baddies.
You’d have better luck finding a magic lamp than securing any additional Villains Land details. Still, based on what was revealed at D23, it seems the massive project is packed with plenty of promise and potential to please fans of Disney’s darker side.
