‘Warhammer’ Strikes Again at Amazon MGM, With Upcoming Animated Series

Just a week ago, news broke that Henry Cavill and horror director Mike Flanagan are collaborating on a live-action Warhammer 40k project, and more news has dropped. Amazon MGM has confirmed another massive, in-universe production. Developing alongside Flanagan’s live-action feature, Amazon will tap into the success of its animated Secret Level franchise. Dave Wilson, who directed the anthology’s extraordinarily popular Warhammer episode, will return alongside Executive Producer Henry Cavill. They are set to deliver a fully animated series based on 40k‘s Deathwatch Chapter.

    Games Workshop

    From Anvil to Fire

Beginning with ‘superfan’ Cavill’s dream pitch, Amazon MGM is jumping headfirst into the world of Warhammer 40k. Capitalizing on both fronts, the streaming giant is officially sinking its teeth into an animated feature. Partnering with Cavill back in 2022, Amazon acquired global rights to the 40k brand. With creator Games Workshop’s blessing, lore purist Cavill found a home for Warhammer projects at Amazon MGM. Since then, the studio has teased fans with a singular surprise. December 2024 saw the release of Amazon’s Secret Level, an animated anthology series. The 15-episode run served as what director Dave Wilson considers “A launchpad for larger stories.” Accordingly, the series adapts several different gaming franchises into animation. Giving fans an idea of what a production in their favorite universe could look like. Some even tied into established lore. Thus was the case for Wilson’s Warhammer episode.

    From Fire to Screen

The episode, And They Shall Know No Fear, directly tied into Games Workshop’s extremely successful video game launch of Space Marine 2 just a few months prior. Basically, it served as a soft sequel to the game. After the events of Space Marine 2, protagonist Lieutenant Titus and his squad of fellow marines are sent to investigate reports of supernatural corruption on a far-off Imperial world. The short is just under 20 minutes, and not one of them is put to waste. Accordingly, Wilson shows the power of what a property in the hands of a fan “for more than twenty years” can produce.

Production quality and story direction garnered universal praise from fans and critics alike. The short itself immediately reinforced Amazon’s commitment to the franchise. Meanwhile, behind closed doors, Wilson and Secret Level creator Tim Miller were tapped to create a full spinoff series in the 40k universe. Miller’s animation company, Studio Blur, will continue to bring the property to life with Wilson at the reins. Following confirmation of the series, veteran screenwriter John Orloff (Band of Brothers) has been recruited to co-create alongside Wilson.

    The Deathwatch

Though specific details are under lock and key, the series itself will piggyback off the lore around shared protagonist and key series ambassador, Lieutenant Titus. Over the last 4 years, everyone involved with creating this extended universe has put on one hell of a marketing campaign. With Warhammer having such a massive amount of lore to digest, Games Workshop has pulled double duty. They’ve had to create bridges to comfortably accommodate veterans and newcomers alike.

At the start of Space Marine 2, Titus is serving with a Marine Chapter called the “Deathwatch.” Think of Space Marine Chapters like Houses in Game of Thrones. In turn, the Deathwatch is just like the Knight’s Watch, minus the criminal angle and with limited terms of service. They take exceptional Marines from every Chapter and pit them against the unmentionables of the Cosmos. Units of the Deathwatch eradicate major threats before entire legions of walking nuclear weapons are needed. The game’s tutorial sees Titus nearly killed at the end of his tenure with the Deathwatch. Though his watch has ended, the new series will explore the fabled Chapter he was a part of.
