‘Horizon Zero Dawn’ Surpasses Ten Million Copies Sold

March 1st marked a huge milestone for Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Zero Dawn. It marked two years since the game’s launch on the PS4. Additionally, managing director Hermen Hulst revealed that the game has now sold “well over” ten million copies. This number likely encompasses physical, digital and bundled versions of the game. Responding to the large numbers, Hermen Hulst said:

“The idea that we were able to bring Aloy’s journey to so many players is astounding. We’ve been deeply moved by the enormous amount of fan creations you’ve posted online, as well as the heartfelt letters you’ve sent sharing your favorite moments from Aloy’s journey.”

Hulst also shared peculiar details about the game’s development process. Lucas van Tol, Guerrilla’s music supervisor, recorded his own daughter’s voice for baby Aloy. He also researched 750 bird sounds for the game, but only 30 made the cut. While Aloy’s character model was still being developed, the model for Killzone 3’s Jammer was used as a stand-in. The Thunderjaw was the first machine to be developed by the team. During the gameplay prototyping phase, it looked like a large children’s toy made of brightly colored bricks.

The Thunderjaw, a true Lego masterpiece

The commercial success of Horizon Zero Dawn means it would make perfect sense for a sequel to be made. No official statements about a sequel have been made yet, but Hulst has previously teased that Aloy may have more stories to tell. In a statement to GamesRadar, Hulst said:

“She’s really uncovered some of the main mysteries in the world, but how do you feel when you finish the story? Are there questions that come up that you want to answer for Aloy? […] The environments and the world that we’ve put together easily raise more questions, so it feels pretty rich to us, but that’s all I can say about that for now.”

Personally, I want to see more of the cute watchers

Only time will tell if we will get a sequel to the series we have all grown to love. It’s obvious from their hard work and dedication that Guerrilla Games have come to truly love Aloy and her journey. I for one am eagerly awaiting a chance to take on the unique mechanical dinosaurs this world has to offer again.
