Nintendo Casts Ganondorf for Upcoming Legend of Zelda Film

It was just about a year ago that we reported some major Nintendo news. We knew The Legend of Zelda was coming as a film. We didn’t know who was playing the leads. That is, until Shigeru Miyamoto announced Bo Bragason and Benjamin Evan Ainsworth would be playing Zelda and LInk respectively. There was a notable character left out of that announcement. What about the villainous Ganondorf? Who would be playing him? A year later and now we know.

    The Casting of Ganondorf

The scourge of Hyrule, Ganondorf, will be played by Uli Latukefu. The Australian actor has previously appeared in Marco Polo and Black Adam. He most recently appeared in the short-lived Amazon series, Countdown. Suffice to say, this role as Ganondorf would be the most high-profile of his career so far. What’s more, he reportedly signed a multi-picture deal. Take that as you will for what that means for sequel potential.

After the success of The Super Mario Bros. Movie, The Legend of Zelda franchise was the next big Nintendo property to get a film announcement. It wasn’t entirely surprising. The Mario and Zelda games are two of Nintendo’s biggest tentpoles. Other franchises have missed console generations but Mario and Legend of Zelda titles never miss a beat.

    Missing Triforce Pieces

Details about the film are still largely unknown outside of the casting announcements. We don’t know if the story will be completely original, or adapt the plot of one of the games. Meanwhile, a supporting cast of characters hasn’t been announced either. Sony will be distributing the film. It’ll hit theaters on May 7th, 2027. That’s literally all to be said about the movie. Nintendo probably wants to keep things close to their chest for the time being. Additionally, there’s a lot of expectation being placed on this movie. The fact that it’s live-action makes it even more apt for critiquing. With an animated film like the aforementioned Mario one, the characters were animated. But here, these actors will be embodying beloved characters that people have known for decades.

    Waiting For the Hero

We eagerly await more information about The Legend of Zelda film. It’s under a year away from hitting screens. That’s something hard to believe in its own right. The Master Sword starts swinging next May.
