Jay and Silent Bob Sewing Seeds in Farm Sim Game

Recently, at San Diego Comic-Con, funny man Kevin Smith surprised fans by announcing another foray into the gaming scene. Jay and Silent Bob’s Joint Venture is being developed by indie studio Nitrate Games. It will see Smith’s beloved characters pivot from drug sales to production. You can play along as they ditch dime bags for dirty nails in a bid to grow their own “green.”

    Origins

Jay and Silent Bob have some deep roots. They first appeared as supporting characters in Kevin Smith’s directorial debut Clerks (1994). The titular duo, Silent Bob, played by Smith himself, and Jay, portrayed by Jason Mewes, became a cult hit. You’ve got Silent Bob and his, well, silence. He plays foil to a raucous, often outlandish Jay. It’s a bit that often transmutes into comedic gold. Over the years, the team has become notorious for their antics outside a fictional New Jersey grocery store. The duo heckle passersby through marijuana sales. That and Jay’s tendency to spout wild drug-fueled anecdotes to any warm body in sight. Both characters have gone on to be included in all nine of Smith’s View Askewniverse films, acting as leads in three of them.

    Realm Hopping

The duo has gone past just movie characters and turned into a multimedia empire. Along with comics and animation, Jay and Bob have been featured in two standalone video games with a third on the way. Their first two forays into pixelated pastures came in the form of the side scrolling beat em’ up genre. Jay and Silent Bob: Mall Brawl (2020) followed by Jay and Silent Bob: Chronic Blunt Punch (2026). Smith’s Comic-Con announcement shakes up this trend by placing his characters in a farming/life sim. A gaming sub-genre with a track record for being cozy and family friendly. Speaking at Comic-Con, Smith was excited, he “cannot wait” to see what shenanigans Nitrate games has in store for his drug-addled pals.

This genre of games has taken on a life of its own since Harvest Moon basically patented it back in the mid 90s on the Super Nintendo. Now Smith and Mewes want a plot of that land with their own drug fueled take on it. Jay and SIlent Bob’s Joint Venture already hints at the content in the title. The word “joint” has a double meaning that you probably don’t need us to explain to you.

    Under the Hood

Nitrate Games is a brick and mortar indie studio, and Jay and Silent Bob’s Joint Venture is their maiden voyage. Nitrate may be new to the water but they have one hell of a crew at her riggings. The studio was launched by a trio of founders Daniel Kendrick, Montana Sommese, and Nick Madonna. Each brings to bare an arsenal of experience with impressive credits in the film and gaming industry. From projects such as Netflix’s Locke & Key, Godzilla, and Sonic The Hedgehog, to work with gaming giants like Saber Interactive, Square Enix, and Vivendi Universal. The team shares a united vision, “to make games we wish existed when we were kids.” Nitrate aims to be a studio “with an eye toward creating unexpected takes on unique, beloved properties.”

    Silent Bob Speaks Out

Regarding the game, Smith said, “Since Jay and Silent Bob are the stars of this hilarious growing game, I cannot wait to play with myself.” We don’t have a tremendous amount of detail about the game yet. Farming sims are the kind of product that you kind of already know what your’e getting into. The title will be releasing in 2027 for PC and Steam. When we get more updates about it we’ll tell you and be blunt, man!
