First Monkeys Now 2 ‘Feral’ Emus Loose in South Carolina

Last week, a troup of monkeys escaped from a testing facility in South Carolina. Come to find out, it’s not just the primates on the loose. Because a pair of escaped emus are also running wild. Better yet, their names are Thelma and Louise.

Private animal owner Sam Morace posted about the missing animals on Facebook a few days ago. The animals escaped about three months ago. (Though the post didn’t include an explanation of why he was posting about it now.) Law enforcement is aware of the situation, but apparently the animals are not easy to catch as Morace described them as “feral” and “not trained.”

The Horry County Police Department discussed the situation in a post, also to Facebook.

“WE ARE NOT EMU-SED…#HCPD is aware of social media posts circulating that reference emus on the loose in the Green Sea area of unincorporated Horry County,” the post states. “The department is aware of the reported emus and we have made contact with the owner. We are working to aid the owner in the effort to locate and capture the animals. There is no risk to the community associated with the emus at this time.”

It appears one of the two emus was being moved to another paddock when it decided to hop a fence and the other followed with it. Makes you wonder if they were named Thelma & Louise after they escaped, or the two emus were just very attuned to their cinematic counterparts.

If you live in South Carolina and happen to spot an emu or a monkey, you’re at least assured that you’re probably not seeing things. We’ll let you know if these animals are eventually recovered.
