Jim Carrey has had a strange career over the last ten years. Despite having a tremendous run of films through the mid 90s to the mid 2000’s, he hasn’t capitalized on that fame in recent years. Believe it or not, the only films Carrey has done across the last decade have been the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. Granted, he does a fine job as Dr. Robotnik, but this seems like a huge waste of his considerable talents. We’re not sure if this latest role is going to really change that, but we’re eventually going to see him as George Jetson.
Meet George Jetson
If you’re of a certain age, you know The Jetsons. In fact, you probably but them hand-in-hand with The Flintstones. Both were Hanna-Barbera cartoons, both were aired in primetime. One was about a family in the future, another about a family in the past. But unlike The Flintstones, The Jetsons was a relative failure when it first released. While Fred, Wilma, and the rest of the citizens of Bedrock had six successful years in primetime, George, Jane, Elroy, and Judy only had one. That didn’t stop it from living on in reruns though and eventually getting a revival in the mid ’80s.
It seems Warner Bros. is trying to revive it again with Carrey as the head of the household. George was the loveable breadwinner of the family, overworked despite only having to push a button. George worked for Spacely Sprockets and was constantly being threatened with termination by his boss, Mr. Spacely. Other shenanigans ensued of course. It helps that they had a talking talking with a speech impediment named Astro. Not to mention the sassy robot maid, Rosie. We don’t know who will be playing any of them at the moment. The same goes for George’s daughter Judy, his boy Elroy, and Jane, his wife.
Echoes of the Past
The film and casting of Carrey was rumored last year with Colin Trevorrow allegedly attached to direct. The project has been brought back into the headlines though thanks to a Warner Bros. letter to shareholders. On August 6th, 2026 said letter was released and contained a line about Carrey playing George in the upcoming live-action The Jetsons film. There’s other stuff in there meant to keep shareholders excited, but who cares about that? It’s all about The Jetsons baby!
So, now that we’ve covered that, we need to talk about “We’re the Jetsons” also known as “The Jetson’s Rap.” Like we previously mentioned, The Jetsons saw a comeback in the mid 80s. The show got commissioned for two more seasons of episodes in 1985 and 1987. Also in ’87, a TV movie was made that had The Jetsons meet The Flintstones in a legendary cartoon crossover. It was called The Jetsons Meet the Flintstones. The title was a little on the nose but what are you going to do? At least you knew what you were getting from the title.
We’re not going to go into hyperbole and declare that “Jetson’s Fever” was sweeping through the nation but there was definitely a renewed interest in the show. An animated movie was also put into development that eventually got released in 1990. The quality of it is… fine? We guess. It’s been a while since we watched it but if our childhood recollections are anything to go by, it’s not awful. But it does have one moment of grandness that shall live on in pop culture history for all eternity. That’s where “We’re the Jetsons” comes in.
Rapping With The Jetsons
You know how sometimes a song makes it onto a soundtrack that never would’ve been written otherwise? Like, it’s specifically written because the movie requires it? Take “Ghostbusters” for example. The only reason that songs exists is because of the film. Well, “We’re the Jetsons” is that kind of song but it’s a rap about The Jetsons. It also shamelessly borrows from Salt-N-Pepa’s “Push It.” Actually, maybe “borrows” is a gentle way of putting it. That catchy synth line that gives the song its melodic hook? “We’re the Jetsons” takes it and runs with it the entire time.
The track is listed as being performed by XXL and we’ll be damned if we can find anything more about this man. This could be the only thing he ever put to record and if that’s the case, he’s a legend. His flow and delivery are ahead of their time, if the time you’re comparing it to is the “DK Rap” from 1999. Yeah “We’re the Jetsons” is basically a combination “Push It” and the “DK Rap” from Donkey Kong 64 with lyrics about The Jetsons. It should not exist. It does. The world is better off because of it. And this article about Jim Carrey playing George was the only real chance to talk about this world wonder and have it be germane to something.

It even samples the “Meet George Jetson” lyric from the original theme song! And how about that “Jetson! You’re fired!” breakdown that serves as the song’s bridge? It’s genius. Or madness. We’ll be honest, that transition from the ’80s into the ’90s was a really weird time.
But Seriously, Who Asked for This?
Honestly though, is anyone asking for a Jetsons movie in the mid 2020’s? In 1994 we got the live-action film, The Flintstones. It did pretty well for itself at the box office but was critically ravaged. Even though we were pretty far removed from the days of the cartoon airing, people who grew up with it we’re in a position to revisit that nostalgia. Plus, the show was airing in reruns enough to keep it in the pop culture zeitgeist. Now, in 2026, can anyone really say that The Jetsons carry that kind of clout? For that matter, does Jim Carrey? Twenty or thirty years ago, you could have easily sold a Jetsons film on the back of Carrey’s star power. That doesn’t ring true anymore.
