Universal Pictures and Blumhouse‘s 2021 horror film “The Black Phone” is getting a sequel. The announcement comes from director Scott Derrickson himself. It will be interesting to see how this potential franchise takes off.

“The Black Phone” has quite the sinister original concept for a horror movie. Ethan Hawk starred as child abductor and murderer, the Grabber. Hawk’s character abducts 13-year-old Finney (Mason Thames), locking him away in a soundproof basement. The only item in the basement is a disconnected telephone, that mysteriously starts ringing. When Finney answers he is able to communicate with the Grabber’s past victims, who tell him how to escape. We can only imagine how sinister this sequel will turn out.

Scott Derrickson (“Sinister” and “Doctor Strange“) directed this horror film, and produced alongside Jason Blum and C. Robert Cargill. The cast also included Madeleine McGraw, Jeremy Davies, E. Roger Mitchell, Troy Rudeseal, James Ransone, and Miguel Cazrez Mora.

“The Black Phone” made over $160 million around the world, as many viewers had positive reactions to it. It has won the 2022 Saturn Award for best horror film and the 2023 Hollywood Critics Association Film Award for best horror.

There is currently no cast or plot information available. Blumhouse and Universal have several franchises with expected sequels planned for 2025. The hit killer doll movie “M3GAN” is coming back with “M3GAN 2.0.” “The Exorcist: Believer” will also be returning with “The Exorcist: Deceiver.”

You can currently stream “The Black Phone” on Peacock. The sequel is confirmed for a Summer of 2025 release.
