Despite Season 2 Renewal, HBO Max Cancels “Minx”

HBO giveth and HBO taketh away. Despite HBO Max renewing the show “Minx” for season 2 back in May, the cabler has now decided the cancel it. Apparently right as they were wrapping production on the season.

This is just the latest in a wave of cost-cutting measures due to the Warner Bros. Discovery merger.  Part of the deal with Discovery buying WarnerMedia was that CEO David Zaslav promised shareholders they could find $3.5 billion in savings within the newly combined company. This has led to a wave of drastic, and often perplexing budget cuts. This deal has already cost audiences an almost completed “Batgirl” movie. A third installment of “Wonder Woman” was recently scrapped. Almost all of the “Sesame Street” seasons have been pulled from  HBO Max. And TBS (owned by Warner Bros. Discovery) canceled the already-completed season 2 of their show “Chad” just weeks before it was supposed to air.

The first season of “Minx” will also leaving HBO Max. While that may seem like a huge middle finger, it does open the door a bit more for producer Lionsgate Television to shop it somewhere else. Which it currently seems they plan to do,  according to series creator Ellen Rapoport.

“We have enjoyed a good partnership with HBO Max and are working closely to find a new opportunity for ‘Minx,’ so current, and new viewers, can continue this journey with us,” Lionsgate said in a statement.

“Minx” is a show set in Los Angeles during the 1970s. It revolves around Joyce (Ophelia Lovibond), an earnest young feminist, as she joins forces with a low-rent publisher (Jake Johnson) to create the first erotic magazine for women. The cast also boasts talents like  Idara Victor, Jessica Lowe, Lennon Parham, Michael Angarano, and Oscar Montoya.
