Bruce Campbell to Pen “Sgt. Rock vs Army of the Dead” for DC Comics

Man, myth, legend Bruce Campbell is writing a new action horror story for DC Comics. Campbell has written several books, but this will be his first foray into comics. It may seem weird for Campbell to be doing a Sgt. Rock book. Rock, who first appeared in 1959, is typically a character who appears in straight war stories. In a move that plays to Campbell’s horror roots, the comic will feature the soldier taking on the undead.

“Sgt. Rock vs The Army of the Dead“ will be a six issue story that will be out this September. From DC Comics’ official summary: “Sgt. Rock, hero of the European Theatre, and his Easy Company find themselves dispatched into enemy territory to face off against the strangest, most horrific enemies they’ve encountered yet: Nazi Zombies.”

The story will be a part of the DC Horror imprint, which can be more extreme than normal stories. Expect a lot of battle-hardened dialogue and no shortage of blood and guts.

Given Campbell’s love of puns, there will probably also be tons of hilariously cringeworthy jokes.

A murderers row of awesome artists will bring Campbell’s story to grisly life. Led by Eisner award winning artist Eduardo Risso (“100 Bullets“), there will also be numerous variant covers from people like Charlie Adlard, Francesco Francavilla, and Pia Guerra. Perhaps the most interesting cover will be one done by Frank Quitely, which is being called the ‘Duffle Bag Gore variant.’ Apparently, Quitely’s cover is so gruesome, it will come in a special bag to hide it from innocent eyes.

Anyone who is a fan of Bruce Campbell and horror should get your preorders as soon as you can. Especially if you want those variant covers, which will go quickly.
