OnlineCheckWriter.com Highlights Form 1099-NEC Preparation Tool as 2026 Reporting Threshold Rises to $2,000

IRS raised the general threshold for qualifying nonemployee compensation paid in 2026 from $600 to $2,000, while businesses remain responsible for determining which payments are reportable.

TYLER, Texas, September 12, 2026. OnlineCheckWriter.com, a business payments platform powered by Zil Money, is highlighting its in-platform Form 1099-NEC preparation workflow as businesses begin planning for 2026 year-end contractor reporting.

The change comes as the federal reporting threshold for certain nonemployee compensation increases substantially.

The Internal Revenue Service says the general Form 1099-NEC reporting threshold for qualifying payments made in 2026 is $2,000, compared with $600 for payments made before 2026. The change was enacted under Section 70433 of Public Law 119-21. The IRS has also noted that the previous $600 statutory threshold had been in place since 1954.

For businesses that work with independent contractors, that makes accurate year-to-date payment records particularly important. However, reaching $2,000 does not automatically mean every vendor or contractor requires a Form 1099-NEC. The IRS provides exceptions based on the type of payment and recipient, and separate rules apply to payment-card and certain third-party network transactions.

    Preparing Form 1099-NEC Inside OnlineCheckWriter.com

According to OnlineCheckWriter.com’s Form 1099-NEC support documentation, users can begin the process from the platform’s Reports section.

The workflow allows a business to select existing business information or enter it manually, choose a date range, and select payees. Users then provide the required payee Tax ID, address and reportable amount before generating the form.

The completed Form 1099-NEC can be reviewed on screen, printed or downloaded as a PDF.

Keeping that workflow inside the same platform used to manage business payments can help finance teams reduce switching between payment records and separate document-preparation tools during year-end reporting.

The feature should not be interpreted as determining a business’s tax-reporting obligation. Businesses remain responsible for confirming whether a payment is reportable, verifying payee information and determining the correct amount to report.

    1099-NEC Filing Requirements Still Apply

The IRS generally requires Form 1099-NEC for qualifying nonemployee compensation to be filed with the agency and furnished to the recipient by January 31 of the following year, subject to applicable weekend and holiday rules.

Businesses should also distinguish between preparing a form and filing it with the IRS. OnlineCheckWriter.com’s current support documentation describes generating, reviewing, printing and downloading Form 1099-NEC. It does not describe IRS e-filing through the feature.

The IRS says businesses required to file 10 or more information returns in a calendar year generally must file electronically. Businesses should review current IRS guidance or consult a qualified tax professional before filing.
