“Freaky Friday 2” Nabs “Welcome to Chippendales” Director

Oscar-winning actress Jamie Lee Curtis and Lindsay Lohan have been very vocal about wanting to star in a sequel to their 2003 film, “Freaky Friday.” The duo played a mother and daughter who swap places and gain a deeper understanding of each other. While a proposed sequel has been kicking around for years, there have been a lot of developments with it lately.

The latest is Nisha Ganatra (“Welcome to Chippendales”) signing on to direct!

Curtis and Lohan are still in talks to reprise their roles and nothing is super official yet. But it seems VERY likely. “Freaky Friday 2” is on track to start shooting in Los Angeles this summer. There was an early draft of the script written by Elyse Hollander, but, it is unclear if her script will be used.

    Possible Plot

Curtis did have an interesting pitch for a follow-up film. “Let me be the grandma, let me be the old grandma who switches places, so then Lindsay gets to be the sexy grandma who’s still happy with Mark Harmon in all the ways you would be happy with Mark Harmon,” she explained. “I would like to see Lindsay be the hot grandma, and I would like to see me try to deal with toddlers today. I want to be a helicopter parent in today’s world.”

Andrew Gunn will also return to produce the sequel alongside former Disney executive Kristin Burr. Ann Marie Sanderlin is attached to executive produce. There is no word yet on if this will be a theatrical release or premiere directly on Disney+. However, I think we’d put our money on a theatrical release considering how much Disney has made off its previous adaptations of “Freaky Friday.”

    “Freaky Friday“‘s Legacy

Disney first adapted “Freaky Friday” in 1976. It’s based on Mary Rodgers’ 1972 novel of the same name, and starred Jodie Foster. The company remade the film in 2003, with Lohan and Curtis. And in 2018, Disney Channel turned the story into a musical movie.

We’ll keep you posted on  “Freaky Friday 2” updates as they become available. You can catch the original and the 2003 version on Disney+.
