An immersive Willy Wonka experience in Glasgow, Scotland was so bad it made kids cry and the police were called. Willy’s Chocolate Experience promised fans a breathtaking trip into the fantastical world of the fictional candy maker. Even though, the event is in no way shape, or form affiliated with the recent Warner Bros. Pictures movie “Wonka.”
Organizers got as close as they legally could to claiming some connection to the beloved Roald Dahl novel it’s based on.
Willy’s Chocolate Experience invited customers to “embark on a journey filled with wondrous creations and enchanting surprises at every turn!” It was said to contain an enchanted garden, an imagination lab, and a twilight tunnel. Promising “mind-expanding projections, optical marvels and exhibits that transport you into the realm of creativity.”
The website pairs these claims with gorgeous fantastical, AI-generated, artwork. These promises and the £35 ($44) price tag had patrons’ hopes high but what they got was anything but wonderous. Attendees got a sparsely decorated warehouse, that had a smattering of plastic props, a small bouncy castle, and some cheap backdrops pinned against the walls. Seriously a lot of these images look like things you could grab at Spirit Halloween.
It was such a letdown that Scotland police were called to the scene and decided to shut the event down. All of the drama surrounding Willy’s Chocolate Experience left many kids in tears, which to be fair, does fit the book and movies. But it’s definitely not what customers wanted, and their tickets were all refunded.
In a statement, organizers House of Illuminati apologized to customers for the entire affair. “Unfortunately, last minute we were let down in many areas of our event and tried our best to continue on and push through and now realise we probably should have cancelled first thing this morning instead,” it said.
True to their word, the website no longer allows tickets to be purchased. We aren’t sure at this time if that’s because organizers plan to try again, or are just leaving the site up.
Images of Willy’s Chocolate Experience soon went viral online becoming the ultimate example of expectations vs. reality. Many on social media compared the look of the warehouse to a meth lab.
While we are not attempting to place any blame on ticket holders, since there was obvious deception by the organizers. This is a reminder for consumers to be leery of any event that doesn’t show real images. Doubly so if it is unaffiliated with the property it’s representing because it probably has less of a budget than something backed by a major studio. The rise of AI is making it much easier for deceptive marketing practices to run amuck. Meaning consumers must become even more vigilant, which sucks.
