Liquid Death Launches Iced Tea Line with Heavy Metal Grannies

A cultural obsession with youth makes it nice to see someone like canned water company Liquid Death break with the norm. To promote their new line of caffeinated ice teas, they gave us all the gift of heavy metal grannies.

Liquid Death’s ad is directed by “Jackass” co-creator Jeff Tremaine. Who, unsurprisingly, has it littered with “Jackass” style stunts performed by people dressed up as elderly women. There are apprentices by skater/MMA fighter Jason Ellis, musician Jen Razavi, comedian Shapel Lacey, and skater Dane Burman. Liquid Death’s own VP of marketing Greg Fans and co-founder/CEO Mike Cessario also make appearances. The SFX are handled by Tony Gardner, the man behind everyone’s favorite Good Guy doll, Chucky.

The entire ad is also backed by a heavy metal band made up of faux mee-maws. Providing the soundtrack to the weirdest Red Hat Society meeting we’ve ever heard of. Now if you’re thinking to yourself, “haven’t we seen grannies run amuck before?” Yes, Liquid Death did draw inspiration from Monty Python’s legendary “Hell’s Grannies” sketch.

“We grew up on Monty Python and Jackass, so it’s no surprise we made an homage to some of our heroes,” Liquid Death VP of creative Andy Pearson said about the ad. They even came up with flavor names poking fun at how dated people think ice tea and the elderly are. With names like Grim Leafer, Armless Palmer, and Rest In Peach you’ll be sure to find something you enjoy.

Considering Liquid Death announced Dorothea “The Godmother of Drumming” Taylor is a brand ambassador, we think it’s safe to say the company is going all in for mocking stereotypes about tea.

“Tea has been around for thousands of years,”  Pearson explained. “In fact, most people probably see it as something their grandmas drink. With that little kick of caffeine, it’s almost like the original energy drink. Ironically, most of the tea that’s on the market today is packed with caffeine and sugar. As a health beverage company, we set out to make a killer iced tea that didn’t come with all the unhealthy junk–something your grandma would probably even approve of.” The entire concept became “taking all the stuff energy drinks try to own and just remaking it with grannies instead.”

Check out the two ads for Liquid Death’s ice tea blow. You can find the entire line of products at grocery stories, BevMo, and even on Amazon.
