CD PROJEKT RED, Fool’s Theory Doing “The Witcher” Remake

CD PROJEKT RED (CDPR) has never been shy about letting fans know what titles they have in the works. Previously, they’ve whet the appetites of gamers with the announcement of a fourth Witcher game, and more from “Cyberpunk 2077.” They’ve also announced a secret project codenamed Project Canis Majoris. Everyone had their theories, but now that project has had the curtain lifted.

Canis Majoris is actually CDPR teaming up with developer Fool’s Theory to remake the first “The Witcher” game using Unreal Engine 5.

    CDPR

CDPR is giving Fool’s Theory full creative license to handle this remake. Filled with developers of the original game, this is a chance for the Polish dev to really show their chops. It’s the chance to turn “The Witcher” into the truly realized vision that was restricted by game technologies at the time. If you’ve played the original game, you know where it struggles. Being remade with Unreal Engine 5, it’s safe to say that the game will boast impressive visuals. Riding off the legacy of “The Witcher 3: The Wild Hunt,” Fool’s Theory already has the building blocks for solid gameplay. So this is very exciting news coming out of CDPR.

    CDPR

The game is in very early stages, so it will be a while yet before there’s any more news past this. CDPR asks that fans be patient with Fool’s Theory and that they’ll update as progress develops. Fool’s Theory has previously supported projects like “Ourtrider” and “Baldur’s Gate.”

    Love it, or Hate it?

“The Witcher” game has always been divisive amongst fans. Built using a retooled “Dragon’s Age” engine, it had its flaws. Some love what it tried to be. Others pan it, saying that it’s only necessary to play the third, skip one and two. We can attest that “The Witcher” wasn’t the prettiest game out there, and definitely had its share of clunkiness. But this is a fantastic way to introduce new fans to the series. Not everything deserves or needs a remake, but for a series as special as “The Witcher,” we think it’s a great move.

We're thrilled to reveal that, together with @Fools_Theory, we're working on remaking The Witcher using Unreal Engine 5 (codename: Canis Majoris)!

We want to do this right, so please be patient — it's gonna be a while until we can share more details.
