Owen Wilson has recently been reported to be joining the cast of the Loki series on Disney Plus. This news comes from Comicbook.com and later Variety, which also reported late last year that Sophia Di Martino would be appearing in the series. Of course, the series will also feature Tom Hiddleston reprising his character of Loki from the MCU.
Although the details of Wilson’s character are unknown, it is said to be a major role. We would expect no less for such a well-known actor, who also has previous ties to Disney. Wilson voiced the main character, Lightning McQueen, in the Pixar animated Cars movie series. Given the more humorous tone of Taika Waititi’s Thor: Ragnarok movie, perhaps the Loki series will also feature a lighter tone and take advantage of Wilson’s comedic talents.
Loki was killed (or so we thought) by Thanos at the beginning of Infinity War. However, during the time-travel hijinks of Endgame, his 2012 version was able to abscond with an infinity stone back during the invasion of New York in the Avengers movie. So, the Loki of the Disney Plus series may be a sort of alternate timeline version different from the original MCU Loki. We don’t know much about the series, although it seems as though it may involve our main character popping up at various points in human history and possibly altering events. How is he going to pull that off when he has the space stone and not the time stone? Who knows. All that actor Tom Hiddleston has said about the series is that Loki will face more formidable opponents than he has faced before. Given his previous enemies include Hela and Thanos, that suggests some pretty formidable foes.
Like the Disney+ WandaVision series that will debut later this year, the Loki TV series is said to tie in somehow to the upcoming 2021 Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness movie, which is said to be the first “scary” movie in the MCU.
Loki is filming now and is expected to debut in the spring of 2021.
