From the get go, Ridley Scott’s “House of Gucci” is a wild sloppy mess. At best, it is a comically exaggerated Italian telenovela. At its worst, a droll and bloated exaggerated Italian telenovela. We get Lady Gaga doing her best Mario Brothers impression. Any time a film starts with characters presumably meant to be speaking another language (in this case Italian) but actually speaking heavily accented English you know we’re probably in for a chaotic time.  Gaga stars as Patrizia Reggiani, a middle class young woman with dreams of a greater life. She soon meets Maurizio Gucci, played by a…

Legendary director Hayao Miyazaki is coming out of retirement to make one more film for Studio Ghibli. He originally announced he was working on a new project in 2017. In a recent New York Times interview, we got a cryptic update that it’s still underway. Though the auteur has retired a few times before – one of those work pauses led to “Spirited Away” – the filmmaker has decided he has at least one more feature left in him.  In 2013 he retired again, this time for a longer bout. Yet he clearly couldn’t keep away. For those unaware Miyazaki…

You don’t have to beg here (or more) because we’ve finally got the “MacGruber” premiere date! Based on Will Forte’s “Saturday Night Live” character, the series picks up after the 2010 feature film of the same name left off.  MacGruber (played by Forte) was last seen behind bars after saving the nation in a style only MacGruber can. He had just saved the world from Dieter Von Cunth (played by Val Kilmer). After dealing with Cunth in a spectacular way, MacGruber has spent the last decade in prison. Peacock also released this check in with MacGruber from prison. Upon his…

For those who don’t believe in (or prefer) the naughty list, “Santa Inc.” just might be for you. The animated show looks like a Rankin-Bass classic, but the dialogue is more at home in a Seth Rogen film. Which is why it’s perfect that Rogen is playing Santa Claus himself.  The HBO Max series follows the elf Candy Smalls (voiced by Sarah Silverman) who wants to dismantle the hegemonic white patriarchy that has ruled the north pole for so long. The North Pole is asking itself who will be Saint Nick’s successor. She and her friends Goldie (an openly bisexual…

The final trailer for Guillermo Del Toro’s “Nightmare Alley” has materialized, and it has us somewhat intrigued. The teaser was a mere imagery salad of noiresque carnival imagery. This latest trailer gives us a bit more of a look at the cast and two of our main players.  Based on the novel by William Lindsay Gresham, Bradley Cooper stars as Stanton Carlisle. In this final trailer he’s a self purported true medium. It seems he will get drawn into a web of intrigue by Cate Blanchett’s Lilith Ritter. The novel has already been adapted once for the screen in 1947.…

MCU and “Fresh Off the Boat” star Randall Park has joined a new Netflix project. “Blockbuster” is set inside the last Blockbuster Video store in America. The series comes from Vanessa Ramos who has served on a writer on “Brooklyn Nine-Nine” and “Superstore.” She was also a writer/ producer for the HBO comedy series “Crashing.” Park has most recently been playing Agent Jimmy Woo (last seen in “WandaVision”) and a version of himself in Dwayne Johnson’s semi-autobiographical show, “Young Rock.” Not afraid of superhero franchise double dipping, he is currently filming “Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom.”  Blockbuster Video was founded…

Boots and cats and red pandas come to the new trailer for Pixar’s “Turning Red.” The animation studio has dropped their latest trailer for the Domee Shi-directed film. The film centers on Meilin Lee, a self confident, Chinese-Canadian, music obsessed kid.  In addition to the usual perils of growing up, Meilin also happens to suffer from a family curse that turns her into a giant red panda when she experiences strong emotions. Think a fuzzy adorable Incredible Hulk in a style only Pixar can do. Meilin and her friends are infatuated with fictional boy band 4*Town. We can only assume…

The new film “Red Notice” professes to be an original, but there’s unfortunately nothing unique about it and star power can’t save it. In spite of featuring three of arguably the biggest movie stars in the world right now- Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds, and Gal Gadot- the movie relies too much on our affection for them as personalities and not enough on bothering to tell a compelling story. “Red Notice” ends up being a pretty much paint by numbers crime caper. Johnson plays John Hartley, an FBI profiler on the case of the world’s top two art thieves. Reynolds plays…

Music legend and vaccine angel Dolly Parton will be guest starring in the final season of Netflix’s “Grace and Frankie.” The prolific performer will reunite with “9 to 5” costars Lily Tomlin and Jane Fonda. The trio appeared in the classic workplace satire back in 1980. This will be their first time reuniting (at least in fictional roles, they reunited as themselves to present at the 2017 Primetime Emmy Awards). Netflix is keeping specifics of Parton’s performance under wraps for now. Season 7 is sadly the last for “Grace and Frankie.” The first four episodes of the season premiered as…
