“Road House” will go down in cinematic history as one of the most ridiculously entertaining films of all time. The original one that is; the one with Patrick Swayze, Kelly Lynch, and Sam Elliott. We can’t really say we were surprised when a remake was greenlit, after all, everything’s been getting a remake over the last decade or so. What we didn’t expect was for it to finally happen with Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor McGregor. But somehow it happened, and if new reports are to be believed, it looks like it may be happening again. We didn’t particularly find the…

Boxing used to be a sport with a sense of pride and dignity to it. Yes, it’s violent and aggressive, but it has a physicality to it that is supposed to put two fighters on even ground, to prove who is the the better fighter. It’s supposed to illustrate who can outfight the other given a set of rules and a fight style that is fairly set, yet still has room for variation, finesses, and technique. Over the last several years, Jake Paul has made a mockery of this and that disgrace is set to continue in his upcoming fight…
Weddings are one of those special moments where you can only hope, pray, and prepare for things to go well. Invariably, there’s always at least one thing that goes awry; such is the nature of life. Sometimes a dress gets torn, sometimes someone gets sick, the priest messes up a line, a potentially venomous snake shows up… Oh, well maybe the last one didn’t happen to you or someone you know, but it did happen a couple of days ago at a wedding ceremony in Arizona. Few creatures on this planet can cause as much fear and dread as a…
There are few game shows that have stood the test of time and have remained culturally relevant. In the daytime, you have “The Price is Right.” But at night you have the double whammy (make your own “Press Your Luck” joke here) of “Wheel of Fortune” and “Jeopardy!.” Merv Griffin’s two creations have been packaged together in syndication for years, but it’s the later of which that has become a symbol of intellectual achievement. So let’s say we shake things up a bit and make a new version that focuses less on geography and potent potables, and more on popular…
Sony Pictures’ upcoming remake of 70s sci-fi shlock staple “Barbarella” may be getting a pretty perfect director. Actress Sydney Sweeney (“Euphoria,” “The White Lotus”) will star, and is also serving as executive producer. But the news today is a possible director and writer attached to the project. Edgar Wright is reportedly circling the film. He would be wonderfully suited for this kind of project given his previous work. His “Scott Pilgrim vs. the World” was a fantastic adaptation of the graphic novel series, and “Barbarella” was originally a French adult comic. His Cornetto Trilogy (and “Baby Driver” ) show his…
When the subject of television institutions is brought up, there are always a few big names that routinely make it into that conversation. In the realm of comedy, and specifically sketch comedy, there is no other name like “Saturday Night Live.” When it premiered in 1975 with its “not ready for primetime players,” it became a hit that was often imitated but never surpassed. There were some times along the way where its fate was in jeopardy, but as it approaches the end of its 49th season, its broadcast network, NBC, has some plans in store to ring in its…
The epic poem, “Beowulf” is one of those pieces of storytelling that is as revered as the ancient Greek myths. Dating back to at least 1000 AD, it tells the tale of the heroic titular warrior and his battle against the evil beast, Grendel. There’s also Grendel’s mom and a dragon thrown in there too, but for the purposes of time and relevance, we’ll stick to Beowulf and Grendel. In 1971, John Gardner wrote “Grendel,” which tells the events of the “Beowulf” legend from the perspective of the monster. That story is being brought to life thanks in part to…
One of the biggest news items in Hollywood over the last week has surrounded the massive media company, Paramount. It’s the second oldest film studio in the United States. And because of its mergers with CBS and Viacom, is also a part of the sprawling media company, Paramount Global. Sony Pictures is at the forefront of studios in line to wholly purchase Paramount, and this could come with some pretty major changes. If the purchase happens, it may mean the end of the Paramount Pictures studio lot. Over the last few years, we’ve seen media companies take a hit in…
We didn’t have a lot of good things to say about the “Frasier” revival when it premiered in 2023. While star Kelsey Grammer declared it to be the ‘third act’ for the titular character, we noted that not everything needs a third act, Frasier included. And while the show decided to focus on an entirely new set of actors, one of the few bright spots of the season was the finale, which brought back Frasier’s friend and former radio producer, Roz Doyle. If you were a fan of the revival, or of Roz in general then there’s some good news,…
For millions of people across the world, the late, great Kevin Conroy is the definitive Batman. His vocal performance of the Caped Crusader in “Batman: The Animated Series,” the Batman: Arkham video game series, and various other projects over 30 years left little room for others to improve on. When Conroy passed away in November of 2022, it was an excruciating and devastating loss to fans. There was some solace in knowing that he had recorded voice work for projects that would be released posthumously and while it’s not much, we now have a clip of one of those projects…
