Heath Andrews has been a student of pop culture ever since he found himself to be the only student in 3rd grade who regularly watched "Get Smart" on Nick-At-Nite. Ever since then he's been engrossed in way too much media with a growing collection of music, books, comics, TV on DVD box sets, and a video game collection that could rival a brick and mortar store. Prior to writing for Nerdbot he's written for Review You, MyAnimeList, and various advertising companies. Since 2016 he's run his own YouTube channel under the moniker of The Critical Android where he livestreams video games and uploads podcasts about pop culture and Frasier.

In 1997, comedian Mike Meyers unleashed upon the world one of the more surprisingly endearing parodies of all time. “Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery” took the world by storm, leading to people constantly quoting the film and trying to do impressions from it ad-nauseum. The spy-film pastiche, largely borrowing from the James Bond franchise, spawned two sequels, some dreadfully bad video games that no one remembers, and perhaps the last live-action films to star Meyers that actually made money at the box-office. Now, if you’re looking to revisit those hits, you can do so on Netflix, right now! So…

Some television shows have managed to transcend genre programming to become critical and commercial pop culture icons. “The X-Files” isn’t just known amongst sci-fi fans- it’s a permanent part of the cultural zeitgeist. The same can be said of “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.” From 1997-2003, “Buffy” not only proved successful, but also became highly influential in shaping character dialogue, humor, and narrative arcs. It should come as no surprise that a series revival/reboot was being planned about four years ago. Don’t remember that? That’s okay, it’s pretty much dead now anyway. Writer/producer Monica Owusu-Breen was developing a reboot back in…

Gamers and “Star Wars” fans both were met with a pleasant surprise near the end of 2019 when Electronic Arts and Respawn Entertainment released “Star Wars Jedi: Fallen Order” to the PC, PS4 and Xbox One. The title was noteworthy not just for being a return to single-player actions games with no DLC or season passes, but it was also just damn good. A sequel, “Jedi: Survivor,” was announced earlier this year. Turns out this story is continuing beyond that game in book form. Cal Kestis is a Jedi who lost touch with The Force in order to hide from…

“Days Gone” is perhaps the most unique of the many Sony intellectual properties to make a name for themselves on the PS4. Despite being yet another zombie title, the gruff, motorcycling character of Deacon St. John resonated with players. By most metrics, the game was successful and yet still not successful enough for Sony to greenlight a sequel to it. While we’re not getting a sequel game, we ARE getting a film. “Outlander” heartthrob Sam Heughan may star, presumably as Deacon St. John. The good news is Heughan is comfortable on a motorcycle, as seen on STARZ’s “Men in Kilts.”…

The mid to late 1990s was an interesting time to be a television fan. David E. Kelley was the hot hand in Hollywood. Along with writing and producing “L.A. Law,” he created and wrote “Picket Fences,” “The Practice,” “Chicago Hope,” “Boston Legal,” “Boston Public,” and “Ally McBeal.” While “The Practice” was the longest-running of these (and arguably the most successful considering it spun-off “Boston Legal”), none of the shows were as much of a cultural phenomenon as “Ally McBeal.” After being rumored for some time, the show is coming back in the form of a sequel at ABC thanks to…

One of the stories that has been developing over the last year has been the expansion of a company called Embracer Group. They acquired Dark Horse Comics, and Square Enix sold them the rights to various gaming intellectual properties, including “Tomb Raider.” It’s not hard to understand the logic behind this as owning the rights to a big name brand is pretty significant. Now Embracer Group has acquired one of the most well known properties of all time, “The Lord of the Rings.” Embracer Group began life in 2011 as Nordic Games. One of their first noteworthy acquisitions was the…

It is truly hard to fathom how banning books is a good thing, and that the occurrence still exists. To some, it’s a suppression of free speech. To others, it’s a suppression of ideas. Many compare the practice to an Orwellian nightmare of authoritarian control and subjugation. Or hey, maybe it’s just a good-natured attempt to stop people from learning things you don’t want them to. According to one school in Texas, one of those things that needs to be suppressed is a graphic novel adaptation of Anne Frank’s “The Diary of a Young Girl.” Oh, and also The Bible. The…

The mullet- the haircut that starts off with asking “why,” and then ends with answering, “because I want to.” There are few hairstyles that are so reviled, admired, treated with admiration. That is to say, there are some mullets that are so grandiose in nature, someone who would otherwise hate the style would still look at it and say, “that’s impressive.” If you’re one of those people, or just a fan in general, you need to act fast and let your vote be heard. That’s right, it’s the last day to vote for the 2022 Kid’s Mullet Championship! This is…

The film industry and fans are still reeling from Warner Bros. Discovery axing “Batgirl” and an animated “Scoob!” sequel. Despite both films being almost finished, the movies were shelved indefinitely in favor of a tax write-off. It’s enough to cause speculation as to what other upcoming projects could be facing the chopping block. While we don’t know what all will get cancelled, reports indicate three things are still confirmed to be coming- all from the DC Universe. “Green Lantern” Series- Go! Earlier this year, a Green Lantern series was announced, with Finn Whitrock cast to play Guy Gardner. HBO Max…
