Marching Band Summons Trogdor for Homestar Runner’s 25th Anniversary

Sometimes, a confluence of events comes together in a way that no one could really plan; it just happens that way. We’re not sure if this was indeed providence or an intricate celebratory plot, but the Washington State Cougars Marching Band have put on an amazing show this weekend that just so happens to line-up with the 25th anniversary of legendary website, Homestar Runner.

Last Sunday, the Cougars’ marching band did a tribute to dragons. They started off with “Game of Thrones,” blasting out the theme song to the show and moving into formation with the kind of cadence you’d expect from a well-trained group of dedicated marching musicians. It’s what happened next though that was a pretty unexpected turn.

Back in 2003, possibly before a good chunk of the people on the field were actually born, there was a website called Homestar Runner. The Flash animated website was a pop cultural force at the time and they managed to one-up themselves with the introduction of the man… dragon… dragon man known as Trogdor.

Much to the credit of the Chapman Brothers and their talent, they not only created the character of Trogdor, they gave him a theme song performed by their flagship character, Strong Bad. (That also showed up in “Guitar Hero 2.”) And that’s the song the Cougars’ Marching Band played for their second piece. They got into the formation of Strong Bad and Trogdor before moving onto a tribute to “How to Train Your Dragon,” but let’s face it, Trogdor stole the show.

It’s all the more fitting that this happened when Homestar Runner just released new merch for its 25th anniversary. Would you like a Trogdor plush? How about a Burninating Polo shirt? You can get that too! Outside of Trogdor, you can also grab yourself a Homestar or Strong Bad shirt too and help represent the rest of the cast and their awesomeness. The shirts look amazing, almost amazing enough to make us stop fretting about how old we feel in realizing that Homestar Runner is 25 years old. If anyone can help us through that existential dread it’s TROGDOOOOOOR!!!!!
