Apple Announces “For All Mankind: Time Capsule” AR Experience

We are so very pleased to share the news about Apple’s just-announced “For All Mankind” AR experience, “For All Mankind: Time Capsule.” The second season of the alternate history series is about to hit Apple TV+, and this experience will help fill in some of the gaps of the 10-year time jump between seasons, at least for some characters.

Available NOW, “For All Mankind: Time Capsule“ is a new augmented reality (AR) experience that brings the series right into the homes of fans to uncover memories from the lives of Danny Stevens (Casey W. Johnson) and his parents, astronauts Gordo (Michael Dorman) and Tracy Stevens (Sarah Jones), in the decade between season one and season two.

Krys Marshall, who plays NASA astronaut Danielle Poole in the series, also lends her voice to a few of the elements of the Time Capsule.

Through an interactive AR experience, fans will join Danny as he examines keepsakes full of details about the off-screen lives of the characters and world of “For All Mankind.” Every object tells a story, and there will be some easter eggs around too!

Ronald D. Moore (showrunner, writer, executive producer and fellow NASA nerd) answered our question about whether or not this unique project was previously planned as a possible storytelling tool, or came about more naturally:

“We had been talking about the potential of AR and even VR for storytelling devices for several years, so when this project came up, it was a great opportunity to meld the ideas together, to be able to exploit it for the first time. A lot of things in the AR experience are directly from the show, but some things were created specifically for this, and some things are expansions on ideas kicked around in the writers room. Our interest in the technology and storytelling predates season 1, its something we’ve been talking about in general about using it to produce a television show in a new and interesting way.”

“FAM” producer Ben McGinnis said the project was a natural pairing with Apple, being able to utilize their technology. “I’m a little bit of a tech geek myself, and I like to say Apple keynote presentations when they announce new products are like my Super Bowl, so it was so cool to get to work with them on this. AR was the right medium for this, with billions of Apple devices able to experience it.”

Starring Joel Kinnaman, Michael Dorman, Sarah Jones, Shantel VanSanten, Wrenn Schmidt, Jodi Balfour, Krys Marshall, and Sonya Walger, we cannot recommend “For All Mankind” enough if you’re searching for something slightly more optimistic than your average space show.

Cynthy Wu (“American Vandal”) will be playing Kelly Baldwin, Ed (Kinnaman) and Karen’s (VanSanten) adopted daughter in season 2. Coral Peña (“Chemical Hearts,” “The Post”) will be playing a grown-up Aleida Rosales, the young girl who has become a brilliant engineer with a complicated past.

“For All Mankind: Time Capsule” can be downloaded for free today from the App Store for iPhone or iPad in the US, and will be available in more regions later this month.

We have some really awesome exclusive interviews with the stars and creative team of the show coming soon, so check back for those!

“For Al Mankind” season 2 premieres on Friday February 19th, 2021 only on Apple TV+.
