Mike Flanagan Will Write & Produce The Henry Cavill-led “Warhammer 40k”

Adapting the Warhammer 40K universe was never going to be easy. With a database of lore thicker than a dozen phonebooks and spanning over a hundred novels, jumping into the universe can seem as hellish as its grimdark setting. However, even the uninitiated can recognize key terminology- Emperor, Space Marine, Chaos- and easily place its heavy Neo-Gothic aesthetic. But super fan Henry Cavill has been pushing for a project in this universe. With him in a leading role, and horror wizard Mike Flannigan at the helm, viewers might find the upcoming Amazon series a perfect launch point.

Let’s revisit the pandemic. One thing almost any human on this Earth can attest to is that in those several months of lockdown, more than a few hours of television were consumed. In 2021, season 2 of The Witcher was released on Netflix. Still at the apex of its popularity, Cavill was a huge driving force behind the show’s massive following and subsequent success. With most productions being delayed by one COVID hurdle after another, it’s no surprise The Witcher fell victim as well. Between delays, a ton of press, and behind-the-scenes interviews were released. During one such interview, Cavill let slip he was a massive Warhammer 40k fan.

    Acquisitions

Around the same time, he began dating Natalie Viscuso, the vice president at Vertigo Entertainment. Vertigo has published an impressive catalogue of major releases over the last few decades. Making waves all the way back in 2002 by publishing The Ring, Vertigo went on to back more massive hits. These included Martin Scorsese‘s The Departed and more recently IT Chapter One and Two. As their relationship developed, Cavill introduced Viscuso to the 40k universe. She was genuinely surprised that the IP lacked a substantial presence on the screen.

Piggybacking off of Cavill’s genuine love for the franchise, Viscuso got the Co-founder of Vertigo, Roy Lee, on board to package a marketing pitch to Warhammer’s parent company, Games Workshop, and shop around for a distributor. In 2022, the Trio not only secured global rights to the Warhammer 40k franchise but also penned a distribution deal with Amazon MGM. The deal would see Cavill star in and executive produce future projects. Cavill’s proven track record of a lore-first approach when handling adaptations and a love of all things 40k won over executives at Games Workshop. Excited by the acquisition, the actor said, “For 30 years I have dreamt of seeing a Warhammer universe in live action” and that he “loved Warhammer” since childhood, making the deal “truly special”.

Fast forward to 2026; the engine that is Warhammer has built up a ton of steam. Games Workshop has doubled down financially, allocating a ton of capital and marketing towards the franchise. In 2024, Games Workshop partnered with Saber Interactive to produce the highly successful Space Marine 2 video game. Serving as a great entry point for casual fans and piqued interest in Warhammer‘s intoxicating lore. In tandem with the game’s release, Amazon MGM gave fans a taste of what a 40k production could look like with the release of an animated short called And They Shall Know No Fear. The short was included as one of the episodes inside their Secret Levels anthology series.

With a slate of upcoming Warhammer content, it was revealed that Cavill’s live-action project secured a writer, producer, and potential showrunner. In March, horror staple Mike Flanagan signed a multi-year deal with Amazon MGM to develop and produce original series for Prime Video. With his first project, a series adaptation of Steven King‘s Carrie in the can, Flanagan completed story outlines and began penning a script for Cavill’s live-action 40k production. Having firm roots in faith-based psychological horror, Flanagan has created masterpieces such as the Netflix series Haunting of Hill House, and feature films like Oculus and Steven King’s Doctor Sleep. Flanagan seemingly has all the credentials to weave a tale in the Warhammer universe to capitalize on its Neo-Gothic framework.

    “FOR THE EMPEROR!”

The universe of Warhammer 40k is a bleak, grimdark look, thousands of years into humanity’s future. Having cycled through several ‘Dark Ages, ‘ mankind has suffered, survived, and rebuilt a multitude of times. With space travel achieved under the leadership of the Emperor of Mankind, humanity, through conquest of hostile alien races, has settled the cosmos. 40k explores the danger of putting all your eggs in one basket. What happens when an Emperor revered as a god falls to the blade of his corrupted son? How does humanity contend with hidden gods and magics manifested from emotions themselves? Where do the mundane turn when civil war spills into the street between god-like soldiers once meant to protect mankind? With a lore so rich, Mike Flanagan has one hell of a playground to swing in. We will continue to keep you updated as we learn more in the months to come.
